I recently bought a Denon AVR-3806, and it has a rs-232 port, i know these are mostly used for firmware upgrades, but are there any other uses for it?

According to the 3806 manual, the RS-232C port is for the use of an "external controller" and it goes on to describe how to connect it and set the power switches right. It appears that you can control the 3806 with a different device...why you'd want to is another question.

It doesn't say anything about a projector. I'm sure you'd want to use component or HDMI for that.

Denon gear can often be remote controlled via the serial port. Sometimes the manual even explains the serial protocol used. It's great if you want to do HT automation, otherwise it can generally be ignored.

If you experiment, note that at least some Denon gear needs 9600 8E1 (not 8N1) for serial settings.
