Revel M22 power requirements

I'm buying these speakers sight unseen based on old reviews of the M20 and new reviews of the M22. The newer reviews are both UK based and say these fine speakers need ample amplification to make them sing. I'd be pairing them with a Classe' Cap 101 integrated rated at 100w/8ohms, 140w/4ohms. I know that's not a whole lot of info but has anyone had any experience with these supposed fine speakers. Also, what speaker stand height would you recommend. Regards.

Steve,

Sorry for so late a post. How did you make out with your M22 purchase? I picked up a set myself a week or so back and power them with an HK AVR 635 -- hardly exotic, but the HK's high current is generally enough to push these hungry little marvels. I trust that your Classe', with the stated 140/100 watt power levels at 4/8 ohms, is sufficent given the M22's 6.4 ohm nominal level. Please tell us what you think.

I would have posted earlier, but was leaning somewhat exclusively toward the JBL PT800 series system (and still plan to get a set someday), but then ran across Revel's too-good-to-pass-up clearance of maple finished M22's. I have 24-inch stands on order. What did you end up with?

Chris :)

I picked up a pair of those Maples on clearance as well. I run them off an ATI 1502 - 150W 8ohm 240W 4ohm and use an HK 3480 as the pre-amp. Seems like plenty of power but have nothing to compare to.

I have not tried running the M22's off the 3480's 120 W per channell but prefer the ATI's punch and dynamics with others speakers.

Was curious how they might sound with a tube amp as well.

Sounds like a great combination you have there. Congrats on the M22's -- we are loving ours already. I will plan on getting an external amp down the road.

Are you running these speakers in 2channel? Did you compare them to any others out their like the dynaudio 140's? or the Paradigm studio 40's

Both two-channel (primarily) and 7.1 HT (a bit). I was not in the market for monitor speakers at the time I happened on the recent blockbuster M22 sale, and thus did not compare them to Dynaudios or Paradigms (which, like other Revels, I have heard in different settings in the past). I know you have posted for comparisons among Dyno's, Paradigms and the M22s (along with perhaps DALI?), but cannot yet provide you with those insights. I may have that opportunity soon. That said, these are truly incredible speakers and (as demonstrated by my purchase) I would not hesitate to buy them even absent extensive cross-brand comparisons. There are very few speaker brands or lines about which I would issue such a remark.

I have the M22s hooked up to a JBL-based HT speaker set, powered by an HK AVR635. While the M22s work great in that grouping, which I will likely finesse over time to take ever better advantage of the Revels' capabilities, it is in the two-channel mode that the Revels truly have an opportunity to shine. The intimate nature of our listening space -- on the order of 1500 cubic feet -- coupled with relatively infrequent movie viewing makes the HT element of the system far less important than the music aspect.

We listen to hours of music every day -- everything from classical, jazz, pop, rock, and international music of just about every kind imaginable -- and the M22s project it all masterfully. These are simply incredible speakers.
