I built these about 10 years ago and really like them, but some of the speakers have been damaged recently between my new dog and a move. The boxes are in great shape and I have so much time and effort into them I don't want to give them up. I know the speakers are out of production and have been for some time. Any recommendations for replacements? Would you recommend replacing all of the speakers, even the ones in the 4 surround boxes that are still good or can I get away with just replacing the front and center speakers?

Here is the plans.

Audax 5.25" AP130ZO

Madisound recommended a SB Acoustics speaker. The specifications look to be similar to the Audax. Thoughts?

The problem is you can never find a drop in replacement.

The biggest problem is that the acoustic response of the two drivers is very different. The Audax shows a rising response at 1 KHz. The SB unit a rising response at 3 KHz. So the crossover would have to be redesigned.

The SB unit has an Fs of 33 Hz and the Audax 48 Hz, the VAS of the SB unit is almost twice as high as the Audax unit. The Qs are close and so is the sensitivity. However the box would need retuning at least. I would have to play with it to see if that were possible. Quite likely new enclosures will have to be built.

If you just replaced the drivers with the SB units, you would have a very poor speaker without extensive redesign.

The bottom line is that starting again form scratch ends up being a better simpler solution, than trying to replace drivers, almost always. Either way you will not have the same speakers you had.

Crap! I have so much effort into the enclosures and the mahogany veneer has aged to a really deep reddish-brown. I have found a seller in the UK selling a stash of new ones. Waiting to hear back on how much shipping would be..

Whatever the shipping cost, if you want to preserve those speakers, it will be your best and cheapest solution.
