Redbox Goes Blu?

"While the company has not released an official statement, an advertisement on the company’s Web site, with the headline “Blu-ray Disc just got more convenient,” announced that Redbox kiosks in select Wal-Mart stores will offer Blu-ray Discs for rent, at the same price as DVDs — $1 a day."

Has anyone else heard anything about this? It would be awesome to go to a local Redbox and pay $1 to rent a BD for a night.

This would be awesome... I get free redbox rental codes every week and if I could get blu ray discs from the kiosks I would actually use the codes more often. This is something I have been hoping redbox would do for a while now.

Even if it was $2-3 a night I would rent from it.

But blueray for the same price would be amazing.


I wonder how the logistics (keeping people from renting the blueray by accident) would work.

Not to mention being able to reserve them online, but that could backfire, leaving you waiting for a particular BD like Netflix.

There is a redbox in the harris teeter right across the street from my work, and it's also on my way to/from work. I have blockbuster online which gets me pretty much everything I want, but if I could get blu rays from redbox, and still use the free rental code with it, I would definitley use the service more often.

If they did this it woudl make it very hard to justify download rental prices over $1. My guess is that if/when they go Blu it will be a tad more money.

MovieCube might not like RedBox releasing a blue kiosk.

I haven't seen any Blu-Ray's in any of the Redboxes or MovieCube's near me. I have at least 20 (Wal-Mart, Walgreens, HEB, McDonald's, etc.) within a 10 mile radius.

You say it will hurt download services? Nope! It will hurt the same B&M (e.g., Blockbuster, Hollywood Video, mom & pops, etc.) shops that Netflix hurts. Remember, multichannel (cable and satellite) providers have been providing PPV and video OnDemand movies for years (really decades) with no slowdown in sight. None of them seem to be worried about RedBox, etc.

I need to sit down and see how many BD's I'm getting a month via Netflix and see if this is going to be a cheaper option. Hopefully, the availability is better as well.
