Thanks for the reply. :)

It sounds like a very good player - a very nice purchase. It's just that in my view, I don't really see how minor vibrations would noticeably affect the sound quality. I guess it's possible that there may be some variation with vibrations affecting the player's read circuitry, causing amplitude modulated noise to be added to the analogue output. The only measurements I've come across for this sort of noise were thought to be below audibility thresholds.
My SVS sub can shake things around... the antivibration feature takes care of the issue.

Ah, but how was that test conducted? Bias was not an issue, right? :D
My son in law brought his most favorite recording of his # 1 artist, Johnny Vinelli, and he was there to listen and judge. All I had to do is ask: «So?»

...and he made the call. He said that it was so different from what he ever heard before for this recording, the clarity of the voice, the sound from individual instruments.

End of TEST! Not very scientific, huh? But we were both satisfied... he for what he heard, me for the excellence of the HD-A1.

Check out the Rega Apollo for $995. You can find pre-owned units on Audiogon for around $800.

I never, ever thought the CD player would have much of an effect on the sound I was hearing through the speakers. On Friday I compared the Music Hall CD25.2 to the Apollo using the same recording, with all other equipment being identical. The difference was apparent, and I preferred the Apollo's greater transparency and musicality. Interestingly, I liked the CD25.2 more when listening to Radiohead's "Karma Police" but liked the Apollo much more listening to Coldplay's "Clocks".

The Rega Apollo does not have multichannel analog outputs, only Digital (coaxial and Toslink). No question analog makes a difference.
