Receiver vs. Pre-Pro

Older Mitsubishi ws-65819 (2001-65") and it does not have a dvi input. Ps3 is new 120gb. I am auditioning a Pioneer sc-25 that is paired with my B&K av 5000 which works great together. I have been considering whether or not to go reciever or pre-pro. So far the combo that I am using works well but I have not yet hooked up the secondary zones. Hopefully the onboard amp will be able to control both zones. Have yet to really learn all that the Pioneer does but so far so good. My only problem that I have run into is the use of the receiver as the do all product. What I mean is that I wanted to use all of the HDMI connections to the reciever and then run all the component video to the tv, thus giving me top notch picture for for when the receiver is on or off. See my problem is that most of the time that the family is watching tv there is no need for the receiver to run whereas when we want full effect for movies then utilize the receiver. I just wanted to have it all, and I guess that for now I cannot.

I was just wondering whether Receivers have caught up to pre-pro's, which does seem to be the case.
In my opinion it is not even a question of whether receivers have caught up to prepros, it is a question of whether prepros (in general only) have caught up to receivers.

Receivers cater for a much bigger market than prepros. We all know volume is key to lower prices, that's basic economics. It is quite possible that it cost very little for Denon, Yamaha and Onkyo etc., to include the amp section and tuner in products. Conversely if they exclude the amp section and tuner they may sell a lot less units, and may increase their production costs tremendously.

I agree. Most pre/pros seem to be a generation, even two, behind what the big reciever makers are putting out. I mean look at the latest Sunfire Pre/Pro... it don't believe it even decodes any of the new HD audio codecs.

It seems the higher end pre/pro makers are more esoteric and limited in funtionality in deference to doing what they do ... do ... better.

Seeing as how there are now four threads about this same thing, I just wanted to post the latest solution for what is trying to be done.

What is wanted by the OP in addition to new receiver/pre-pro is the ability to watch tv without turning the receiver/pre-pro on, keeping in mind there are certain limitations with the components.

Connect the HDMI to component cable I linked from the PS3 straight to the display.
Connect the digital audio output from the PS3 to the receiver/pre-pro.

As far as cable or sat, connect component video straight to the display.

Connect the highest audio option from the cab/sat box to the display.

Connect HDMI from cab/sat to the receiver.

Problem solved again.

Compromises are made that have to be made in order to achieve what you are wanting to achieve.

This is where you might run into problems? My cable box didn't recognize other audio options when HDMI is used as the output source...fwiw.

Well, more compromises.

Audio-out from tv to receiver/pre-pro.

All quality lost.:(

Seems easier just to teach wife how to turn-on the receiver.

FYI, the WS-65819 is a 1080i set, does not accept 720p via component, and has a pretty good scaler for SD material. The latter being probably why your wife finds it acceptable to watch SD material via composite video.

Unfortunately, a separate amp is required to run zone 3. But since you have the BK, I’d run the 3 fronts & zone 3 off of it and power the surrounds & zone 2 with the Pioneer amps.
