is ther any way to "amplify" (for lack of better words) the digital in? like boost it or adjust the other inputs to be a bit more equal?
Onkyo has a feature they call IntelliVolume which is meant to help with making the volume levels of the sources more equal. Other brands may have something similar, but I am not aware of any.

Essentially IntelliVolume lets you set a 'correction' factor for each input. So say the CD input is about +5dB louder than most DVDS (because cds are nearly always compressed and extremely loud to begin with). You could set the CD input's IV setting to -5dB as a means of compensating. Not sure if the same can be done for the tuner - I haven't bothered to use the IV feature.

Here we go again with he Sony bashing. There ES receivers of a couple of years ago were the heaviest models in their class. That may have changed with their new digital amp designs, don't know.
Amen brother! My ES is 15lbs heavier than the STR-DE997. So not all Sony's are created equal. The new Sony ES digital unit's are much lighter except for the 9000 series which uses a large torroid transformer.
