Dude if you liked the Pioneer go for it. This is your new toy not his. He probably loves his 354(great receiver), but if you want good remotes and user friendly go with something other than HK. Sure the amp section is great and reliable, but the menu's, and controllers plus the HDMI issues leave much to be desired. I own a HK AVR 247 and I can tell you I much preferred my previous receiver(Onkyo 705)

HK receivers are great for the money, but go with something friendlier. This coming from an HK owner.
the HDMI issues have been fixed for my receiver via firmware upgrade, still there but much better, nothing that i would complain over. again as i told u in another thread, HK as really improved there remotes. i dont know man, i was pretty pleased with my 247. also i found that my current hk 354 was more user friendly in the initial set up.

Not clear to me of OP needs/wants an A/V receiver?

So, what does this future shop card do for you that justifies limiting a $1,000+ purchase to 4 or 5 brands?

i have a futureshop card no payments no interested for 1 year, gives me a year to pay it off. i dont have the money upfront. thats why it limits me to just what futureshop has to offer, and to me, its not a bad selection for what i can spend/need. but i will obv. call before driving out to the futureshop, as far as i sit now i think i will go for the pioneer, but i still have a month or 2 before i do the purchase, so i def. want to check out the HK you reffered me to, but the comparison between the 9040 and the HK, and the price. the 9040 goes for $899 compared to $1399, wtich would leave me more money for blu ray player, and rear speakers.

Pioneer appears at least on the surface to be making amends for the lightweights they had release the last 2 years past. Over 35 lbs and its non-Elite models and from what I can see

Future Shop in Canada also carries Yamaha receivers, and Denon as well. :)

Just a thought... (I personally like Denon,... and Yamaha too).

If they have Denon I would go that route hands down.

ok, well sorry to sound like a total newb but what makes the denon better then the other companys? also can anyone point out on the website what one is suitable? also to throw into the mix, what about this pioneer unit, (if it goes on sale around xmas time) my max spening limit is $1500 on the card. and what is the "icepower", but that pioneer SC-9540 sure looks like one hell of a unit.

Maybe you should have a look at the Denon AVR-989 from Future Shop.
(Or it's replacement, the AVR-990)

It even has preouts for all channels.

* That's a very nice receiver, with solid build quality and a top notch preamp section,
plus some serious oomph too, and a very reliable receiver from a great company.

I thought of this right from the beginning of your thread.
It's the best idea, get one for less than $999, or a bit even less (Canadian dollars), and use the rest of the money towards speakers (better ones, or additional ones, maybe a better sub too, or a second one).

* Check Denon AVR-889, or even AVR-789, or the AVR-689.
Or their newer replacements: 890, 790 & 690.

this denon looks like a nice unit - http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=0665000FS10125143&catid=10551&logon=&langid=EN&dm=DEBUG
now what is denon's power like compaired to HK and pioneer? it states only 105 watts, compared to say a HK with 80 watts and the pioneer with 150 watts? everything else looks good on it, havent played with it in stores yet either, and i see it has 2 pre-amp outputs :), but from pictures online the back of the denon doesn't seem like it has as much as the others

Don't sweat over the number of watts, the Denon receivers are very robust in that department.

The AVR-890 is the same as the AVR-2310, and is an excellent receiver;
you won't be disappointed with this excellent unit. And the price is right too.

* For even more savings ($220 less), and still an excellent receiver, check this one out:
-> http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&dm=DEBUG&sku_id=0665000FS10125142&catid=10551

** The Denon AVR-790 is the same as the AVR-1910, another excellent receiver.
Again, don't look at the number of watts, they are meaningful, the Denon receivers
hold on very well to their power ratings, and this one will be plenty sufficient in your room,
with your speakers and your sub.

Some reviews for the OP.

Here's some reviews on Denon A/V Receivers:

* Denon AVR-989 (same as the AVR-2809CI), which is last year model, and was replaced by the AVR-990.
-> http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/receivers/3100/denon-avr-989-av-receiver.html
))) You don't need that much receiver in your own system, this is just to illustrate the Denon quality.

* Denon AVR-2309CI (same as the AVR-889), which has been replaced by the newer model, the AVR-890.
-> http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/receivers/498-a-secrets-receiver-review.html
))) This is what you ask for; very nice indeed, and all you need and more (AVR-890). :)

* Finally, the Denon AVR-1909 (same as the AVR-789), being breplaced by the AVR-790.
-> http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/receivers/537-a-secrets-receiver-review.html
))) Again, all you really need in your own system, plus a savings of $220 (AVR-790)

To make matters worst :) , you can check at London Drugs for the Onkyo TX-SR-607, another dynamite receiver (see what price it is).

Or if you don't mind last year model (should be on sale), the Onkyo TX-SR706.
Or even the TX-SR606 (also on sale).

*** My take: In Canadian dollars, stick with one of these (enumerated here), and try to be between $500 to $800 maximum.
Your Polk speakers are fairly efficient, and with your 15" subwoofer, you'll be able to get by with any one of these, in your own system, and still have all the power you really need, and more...

There is no rush, TAKE YOUR TIME, and make the right choice.
Read all reviews, get informations about the features you really want, and go to the stores to get a hand on their remotes and GUI menu.
After all, you'll be with it for a while, am I right?

Hope this helps to expand your horizons, for making a wiser choice. :)

Cheers,
Bob
