These two receivers are quite expensive, but they are also from a higher level.

I think that the Pioneer is a better value at $300 less. Plus the Blu-ray player would match nicely. I don't see any problem with your smart choice. :)

Cheers,
Bob

yea the pioneer does everything i will need it to, but comparing the both, it wont play 4ohm speakers, is that a big thing or no? right now i only have 8ohm, so or worries there. im thinking like 2-5 years down the road. thanks, and yea they will match nicley. thanks

Your speakers are 8ohm, so why worry now?
In few years you'll be ready to upgrade anyway, right?, (receiver or speaker; choose your poison). :)

also had a onkyo 806 which was 140 watts and sold that cuz nothing pisses my mom of like my HK. :p, btw the only way to find out what works best wit ur speakers is to actually plug and play, i have a all polk set up like u and i found that HK sounded the best with my speakers. thats just me.

Realistically, no receiver will deal well with 4 ohm speakers.
Both of your candidates have pre-outs. If the need arises both can handle an external amp.

My vote would be for the Yamaha, but I'm jaded.

Do you really want to upgrade or are you just trying to get the new codecs?

im upgrading becase my jvc is really really old, its 5.1 i want 7.1 eventually, and all the new codecs, and more power!

also what makes that HK better then the pioneer? just curious , i compared them side by side online and they seem pretty much the same to me?

That's good reason enough to upgrade.

One is not necessary better than the other one, it's just a question of personal taste, that's all. I wouldn't worry about Pioneer over Harman Kardon, or vice versa.

why cuz it says 150 watts compared to HK's 80? all i am saying is there was a time when i was like u, i saw the pioneer wit more watts and HK wit less, people were telling me what i am telling u and i had a hard time figuring it out, just like u. also ask the rep. i found the pioneer to be more user friendly, hk is not bad, its got the HD menu up front display but its still a lil more complicated imo. test them out, u got the 30 day return policy, use it. lol. good luck

no its not the the power thats making me go pionner. i like the look of it, and the way i was playing with it in the store. im just saying if they put out the same power, what makes one better then the other.
also, you said earlier, the HK sounded better with your speakers? how so?

thanks!

at the store sound and at ur home sound is much different, when i bought my sub i heard it there and it was pretty bad, i got it cuz of the price. when i brought it home i was amazed, i love it. anyways as for my speakers (all polk) i found that HK sounds the best. i bought a yamaha from my local bestbuy and that totally sounded hollow, so i returned it. the pioneer was a shock for me cuz b4 getting it i read alot of good stuff about it and my cousin has the same pioneer with his klipsch f2's and they sound pretty good. i brought home the pioneer and it sounded better then the yamaha but was not a big difference, i found that it was alot like my first HK receiver the 247. all along i knew that i was gonna return the pioneer, i then got the hk 354. the hk receiver was the only receiver that shook my room. the louder the hk gets the better it gets :)

hmm, well i went to look at the HK today, and my local futureshop didnt have it, but i do live within 1hr range of 2 more futureshops so going to see it in person isnt a problem, i also did look at the pioneer 9040, for $899, and the difference from the 9140 and 9040 is just the HDMI, 5/2 compared to 4/1, now the only thing im going to have to hook up is blu-ray and ps3, thats about it really. so for the sake of $300 it sounds the 9040 is my better bet and i save money, but i really do want to check out this HK, its just finding if a store close enough to me has one...

Can't you call the stores before driving every where to make sure they have it in stock?

Dude if you liked the Pioneer go for it. This is your new toy not his. He probably loves his 354(great receiver), but if you want good remotes and user friendly go with something other than HK. Sure the amp section is great and reliable, but the menu's, and controllers plus the HDMI issues leave much to be desired. I own a HK AVR 247 and I can tell you I much preferred my previous receiver(Onkyo 705)

HK receivers are great for the money, but go with something friendlier. This coming from an HK owner.
