Ooo! IT. Man if I could go back in time and light Pennywise's nuts on fire for every sleepless night that bastard child raping clown gave me, I totally would.

That said I gotta go with the op on this one, there just haven't been any good scary movies in a looooong time. The Japanese had a good run but it seems, much like Hollywood, that they've run out of ideas. I mean honestly how many scary little kid movies can you make?

Now if you will excuse me I gotta go to the carnival and break the kneecaps of a couple of clowns before I get home.

Pet Semetary was another good Stephen King flick.

I did a little searching and found that in most of the lists of top 10 scariest, essentially all of the films were 15yrs old or more, with most being at least 20.

The thing is they are not very scary - to me.

In fact, No Country for Old Men is scarier than most horror films I've seen.

Event Horizon was the last movie that scared me. The first time I watched it, I was 18-20 yrs. old, alone on a stormy, dark night. Combining that, the unknown, along with a bit of sci-fi definitely scared me.

I do not go for gore/shock factor movies as they are not really going after fear. One needs the mind to race and help create more fear.

Event Horizon had a few jump scenes, but little more than that and a bunch of gore. It was basically Hellraiser in space. Not bad, but not great.

I really liked the Orphanage. As mentioned, its not scary but is very creepy. So was Cronos. The last movie that sticks out that I found scary was a Japanese import I saw on IDC a few years back. I don't recall the title but basically it was about a haunted film studio lot that had been shut down 20 or 30 years prior after the lead actors died while filming (IIRC before that it had been shut down previously for the same). So it's reopened and some weird stuff is happening to the new actors and people are dying. Also there was some weird tie in to a photograph that kept changing. Anyway it was creepy as hell to watch.

Hey guys, one thing is for SURE-the movie "Mirrors" was NOT really scary. Found it to be waaaaay too predictable. I seen it this past Sunday leaving me with that WTF feeling.:rolleyes: Not even worth a rental imho. Just thought I would mention it.

Cheers,

Phil

I managed to get a copy of The Company of Wolves on Blu-ray from someone who imported it from the UK - I had a hard time finding it even on SD DVD. Video quality is just OK, audio is stereo only and not that great, but the movie is still as insane as I remember it. Creepy and containing a fair amount of well done FX scenes that are pretty good. It isn't outright gore, but some of the scenes are pretty disturbing. Overall a good horror flick; if you haven't seen it, give this one a rent if you can find it.

my two cents

i agree with a lot of you, maybe once you get to a certain age, you cant forget that its a movie, actors , lighting, props, etc...especially with every dvd showing u behing the scenes......a gory/scary scene....director yells
CUT!....and cast and crew laugh. anyways...most scary movies nowadays, at least give you that edge of your seat suspense...hollywood has gotten better the last ten years or so of not making the same old predictable movie over and over....
i liked the saw movies, and i really liked Wolf Creek.

My experience has been most "scary" movies made these days lack a decent story and any real suspense. The "scares" just come from someone/thing jumping out at you. Being startled a few times isn't the same as being scared and it doesn't invoke the same feeling of dread.
