The human mind is so powerful - the power of suggestion and illusion. I mean David Copperfield did make people believe that he made the Statue of Liberty disappear. So to make the human mind believe that a $5,000 CD player sounds better than a $500 CD player is such an easy task.:D
Now I understand how you ended-up with DT.;)

You can thank the room acoustics and speakers for that. If you were to stick "ordinary" electronic components in the system to replace the Krell et al, it would have sounded the same.
That an a large dose of placebo effect (due to the equipment being impressive-looking and obviously expensive) are sufficient to explain it.

Reminds me of when cell phones first came out ...

They were very expensive and few could really afford. I think I bought my first one in around 1992 or 1993. At that time they were selling placebo cell phones that looked like a real cell phone and made some electronic noises , so people could pretend they had a "real" cell phone. It was hilarious. I am still to this day impressed by the people in the airports who find the need to talk on the cell phones and a very loud volume so everyone else will realize just how important they are. It is as if they have no concept that microphones are senstive and accurate and have envolved somewhat from Marconi's and Bell's days.

Anyway my Marantz is so impressive, that most of the time I have the cabinet doors closed on the Amoire so it isn't even visible

Look at hte lower right corner of the picture: Rocko sneaking in the picture :D
