They design their drivers in house and then have them produced over seas.
Thanks, Gene. My wife is not going to be happy with you ... Your review is tempting me to look at a home theater based on these ... :D

That system will blow your mind and likely set a new standard for your expectations of loudspeakers. However, given the amount of subs you have, you can probably get away with a T2 system run full range for the main channels and using your HSU/SVS subs for the LFE channel. It also saves verticle space.

But while you are at it, why not go for broke? Sell all your gear, morgage your home and buy these :D

I will be reviewing these this summer :)

Gene - You just inspired me ... I could show my wife those, explain why I need a $300,000 5 channel system. The RBH looks reasonable compared to that ... :)

With this system, who needs surround sound? ;) They will have a matching center without the bass module and eventual surround speakers to compliment them.

Gene - Mark Schifter may have me running his new RS-2K based system this fall ... but, if not, I will take a hard look at RBH ....

I'm confused. Are certain Status Acoustics drivers produced in-house, but the rest designed here and manufactured overseas? Or are they all made outside of this country?

They DESIGN / Engineer their own drivers, then take the design and outsource it for manufacturing. This is what most companies do that also claim they make their own drivers. This is usually the best way to get manufacturing costs down.

Hello all,

I just thought I ought to shed some light on the RBH driver design. First of all let me say that I appreciate the comments regarding RBH products. From a manufacturer's point of view, any discussion is good discussion, and I appreciate Audioholics providing a forum whereby these topics can be candidly discussed. Now, on to the driver design.

To make a long story..well, still pretty long, the 6.5" "Status" driver being discussed has actually been in existence since 1995, although it did not make its offical debut in a Status Acoustics product until 1997 (see www.statusacoustics.com to view original product). For those of you that do not know the correlation between Status Acoustics and RBH Sound, Status Acoustics is essentially the "Hi-End" division of RBH. The driver initially evolved from a glass fiber cone driver I designed in 1993. In fact, the basic motor structure is virtually unchanged from that driver. Suspension, cone and phase plug have all changed somewhat during the course of time since then, but the basic parameters of the driver are essentially unchanged. Now, given that, I will tell you that all production of these drivers occurs overseas. Up to the the point when I first became involved with the driver design at RBH, all of the 6.5, 8, 10, 12 and 15 inch drivers used in RBH's freestanding product where made in the US. It was at this period in time that RBH started getting involved in the plastic plate in-wall and in-ceiling products being manufactured in Taiwan. Given the production facilities that were available in Taiwan at the time we decide to explore the possiblity of producing a higher-end driver to be used in our freestanding product. Over the course of several years RBH Sound collaborated with our overseas manufacturing partner to develop what we are ultimately using today in our MC and Signature Series products.

So, what does it mean to design/develop a driver? Well that depends. It can mean producing every single compontent from scratch, although this is usually not necessary or cost effective. It at the very least means specifying certain tolerences and performance parameters for the driver. And in the case of the driver in question, there were tooling costs associated with the components of the driver along with a fair amount of other engineering costs. Now, what about the Dayton brand driver available through Parts Express http://www.parts express.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=295-362 . I can tell you this much for certain, it is not our driver. I don't know how long their driver has been available, but I guarantee it was not around when we developed our driver. The most obvious cosmetic differences are the different basket, phase plug and suspension. Beyond that, the TS parameters are different and the frequency response they are showing for the driver is certainly different from our driver. That being said, it may be a fine driver, but I reserve the right to pass judgement until I get my hands on one :)

I recently bought a set of RBH speakers...1044se for L/R, 441se for the center and 44se for the surrounds. Just how much difference is there between these and the 6 se/r series? Night and day or marginal? I'm sure they would fill up a larger room better, but what about the sound quality? Finding a RBH dealer around here, especially a stocking one, is like finding hen's teeth, so not an easy thing to run down and compare for myself. I mainly use them for HT as I have a McIntosh system for critical listening.
Thanks!

Duke,

I'll take a stab at your question and then I'll leave you guys alone.

I would not say the difference between the standard SE and the SE/R is night and day but it is certainly noticable . That being said, the 1044-SE is a great speaker. I have done A/B comparisons where I prefer the sound of the 1044-SE over the 1266-SE and vice versa depending on the room's acoustic properties. The 1044-SE is actually a little warmer sounding than the 1266 in either the SE or SE/R configuration. The 1266 offers extended dynamic range and is more neutral sounding. In the SE/R configuration, no matter which speaker (61, 661, 1266) you purchase you get ultimate mid and high frequency clarity, resolution, and dynamic range. If you have any further questions please send me an email.

Thanks!

Shane

Shamus,...
M.S.R.P. is $2258 pr. 661 SE/R veneer and $1998 pr. for black. Does not seem WAY over to me,... especially if there was a recent price increase. Seems like the dealer is right in line as far as pricing goes,.....not getting an in home demo from that dealer,... well thats something else entirely

I am not sure about a 15% price increase but I did hear they are increasing their prices very soon. It has been two years since their last price sheet was released and rumor has it they are about to launch some additional product upgrades in different models.
