Quick help needed

I got a Pioneer 5.1 receiver for free on craigslist, but it doesn't work. Every time I turn the amp on, the (what I assume to be) circuit breakers to the speakers close and reopen after less than a second, and this cycles infinitely of course. The fuses appear to be all fine. The guy I got it from told me it was plugged in when his house was hit by lightning. I thought the power supply fuse would blow in a situation like that, but I guess not.

Sounds like a bad power supply, or something else?

Good luck. It could be anything, or possibly everything. Lightning eats fuses and keeps on traveling, destroying virtually any component it touches, particularly circuit boards.

Since it was free, maybe a call to a service center for repairs be worth it?

It's a 5.1 reciever. Is it worth $50 to $100 bucks to have a service guy look at it?

If it can be fixed and meets his needs, why not?

But, at what cost? If he can do it himself, fine but with what a good tech charges for his time just to look at it and the cost of replacement parts, I'd give strong thought s before commiting to a repair.

Remember, decent 5.1 units can be had for way less than $200. Sherwood units routinely sell for $130 or so. I got one for my son and it ain't bad at all.

I've seen the damage lightning can cause to modems and multiplexers. It ain't pretty.

No, my memory quits a bit higher Then, if that receiver meets his needs, then there is not even a question what he needs to do, recycle and get a new one.
