This is the wrong place to ask that question. We only know gear.

Morning and evening, when the sun is very low in the sky. You get the best quality and consistency of light.

I envy you - the island looks gorgeous:

ps: You could safely disregard Sheep's sarcastic since:
I'm new here and don't know anything
Regarding equipment itself - I really don't see much use of flash for landscape photography... you of course could take your whole kit, but probably for most situation you'd be fine with 24-105L. Tripod? I don't really sure why.. maybe for dusk or dawn ??

i'm no expert so let met just give some tips.

bring a circular polarizer
definitely not high noon :)
always check the exposure compensation, since it's bright day, i lost some images because i had accidentally rotated the exposure compensation dial at the back of the cam.
use the flash for fill light (for people in the shots)

i bring almost the same thing, coincidentally, i'm going to the beach this weekend
Fisheye, UWA, telephoto, plastic fantastic (50 1.8), flash, tripod

but i'm still mulling the flash
i bought a new tripod though :) Benro Flat Tripod, Carbon Fiber, 8kg capacity for just 1.1kg weight.

don't worry about the thread, it's the right place :) sheep's just being sheep.

well,thanks,

we have been to Maui twice & Kauai twice, but I always just brought good p&s cameras,we usually like to make a theme for us when we go,like the last times we went we made eating the best food our thing, before that was hiking, this time it's shooting for me,and well,of course eating at the best places :D ,

I bring the flash for fill light in daylight when needed, there are many cloudy rainy days there as you know, and deark tree covered flowery beautiful places too,

and the tripod for yes, darker shots and snapshots of me and my wife with the timer or my remote,

I have been shooting slr's and dslr's for a very long time,I understand all the mechanics of photography,I just was asking for any ideas of locations that maybe people had actually been to kind of thing,

and yes Mike,I have a good B&W CPL that fits on the 24-105 and my newest favorite SWA 10-20 sigma,

and yes,I only shoot in RAW\manual.

I have a nice travel backpack that holds all my kit,my laptop, and my personal stuff. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=wishListDetail.jsp&A=details&Q=&sku=531365&is=REG

we like hiking,I don't mind carrying my camera and tripod,I usually pick one lens to use each day and try another one the next day,I carry my camera with me everywhere I go anyway every day .

RAW yes manual not very often. The exposure meters are so good on cameras today you should trust them. Shoot in aperture or shutter priority if you want some control but trust the cameras metering.

+1 - I shoot 99.9% in aperture priority...

Sorry, Dan - I live on the East cost and going to pacific islands for vacation is unfortunately not very practical :(

However I did googled a local company which offers something called photo tours - http://www.hawaiianphotos.net/KauaiToursFAQ.htm

well,I like manual & being in control of both shutter speed and aperture, which as you know still uses and depends on the metering, you do know that manual uses metering ? and yes you are right,my 50D has a great meter on it and I do depend on it in manual mode,if I need a really quick shot I might use AV mode, but I still prefer manual 90% of the time, call me strange :D . maybe it's my 35mm days still in my head, which I still shoot as well btw.

Whatever you are comfortable with. I did that when I first used a digital camera and soon realized it was just not necessary. I usually shoot aperture priority and let the camera do the rest. I rarely have an exposure issue. And yes you are probably correct about being leftover from 35mm. You need to unlearn what you have learned:)

well,I'm kind of reverse of you then :) , I've been shooting digital since I got my first mavica(which had no control what-so-ever) and now 4 canon DSLR's later after starting with digital shooting in AV mode,I have enjoyed being more creative and have ended up shooting in manual and get better shots now than ever.

sure,if I shot car racing or sports photography I would use AV mode, but I don't shoot that.

I shoot portrait/landscape/architectural/cars/wildlife.some event work.
