Question on Wire Hook-Ups for Receiver

I am setting up a new AV Receiver (Onkyo TX-SR506) for my TV viewing. I had been unable to hear the dialog when watching DVD's, and it was suggested on this Forum that I would need an AV Receiver and a couple of speakers to boost the volume. All I want is two channel sound.

In reading the instruction manual it said that I should hook up the Optical Audio cable, and then the Component Video Cables from the DVD Player to the AV Receiver, and then another set of Component Cables from the Receiver to the TV.

As it stands now the Component Cables are going from the DVD Player, straight to the TV. All I want is the Audio boost, why would I need to go and buy another set of Component Cables to have the Receiver as a midway point, and then go on to the TV.

Why can't I just leave the Component Cables as they are, (DVD Player to TV) and just use the Optical Cable to the Receiver for the volume boost?

Thanks,

Jim

Jim the reason to do this would be if you had multiple sources that used component (DVD, Blu-Ray, Sat Receiver, VCR) and your TV had only one you would use the receiver to switch the video to the TV.

If all you want is audio then yes just hook up the optical cable and you are all set.
