Question on the front speaker placement

I am confused on this issue.

There are two approaches to setting the front speakers like perfect triangle with listener at the apex.

Generally the distance the front speakers spread apart must be equal to the listening position from the speakers.

The question is what position?!

Is it distance the speakers from the seat, or from the ears or edge of the seat?

I know a guy who sets the distance the speakers are apart, equal to the distance the speakers are from his nose.

For me I have the two front speakers 8 feet apart and 8 feet away from my ears.

Is that two far apart?

The distance to your ears. It doesn't have to be exact since your room and where you sit in it play a large role in how the sound arrives at your ears too. The "rule" is more of a suggestion for where to start, then you have to tweak it to what sounds best to you.

Front three are equidistant. There is no set rule for how far apart they should be, although I like the WSR "pie piece" approach where all seven are on an equilateral arc in a circle.

Things to watch for are:

1. Separating the L/R so far from the display that there is a disconnect between on-screen events and what you hear;
2. Not keeping the center of the speaker roughly centered with the screen (including center as much as possible.

There are others, but these are two errors so common that they are steps one and two on the checklist.
