Question about stand alone DVD player/recorder

Hi all,

A friend of mine bought a Philips DVDR72/17 three years ago this month which wound up sitting for the last three years because it was too complicated for him to use. He bought a new one for himself for Christmas and gave the old one to me.

I've tried to google information on its surround sound capabilities, specifically if it is capable of reading a 5.1 sound track, but have had no luck. Is anyone here familiar with this model?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

According to the owners manual (on the Philips Website) the player will support Dolby Digital and DTS audio via the rear panel digital coax. Of course, you have to feed that signal to a receiver with DD or DTS capabilities. Hope that helps.
