Wow, that is awesome. $150 for a single BP7002 is UNHEARD of!

If I can find a BP7002 for $150 or $200, I would buy it on the spot regardless how many speakers I have!:D

We look forward to your story; this sounds like quite an interesting experience!:D
Thanks, Acu. It ended remarkably well, just as you predicted! My girlfriend and I will use the trip to Boston as a mini weekend vacation next week for 1 or 2 nights, so the drive will be broken up over a couple of days. I'll be sure to post after I finally set them up as to the sound and my reaction. A pair of 7002s for $380 and a CLR 2300 for $95 - Best Buy has been a pleasure to deal with, as have you guys on the board. I wish you all equally good fortune in your/our mutual hunt for good sounds and sonic fun! Be well!:)

BTW - saw all the pix of your system. Unreal!!!!! As stunning as it is to look at, it must be jaw-dropping to hear, you lucky dog!

Your current situation is definitely looking bright. I would love to hear a great "conclusion" to your current story.:D

I do love the sound of my Def Techs, as do thousands of Def Tech fans ranging from regular folks to Home Theater Magazine to Sound & Vision to Audio Video Revolution, etc.

I never get listener's fatigue from my Def Techs, even at 85dB volume after hours of listening.

In the end, it's how we enjoy the speakers that count, not what other folks say - good or bad.

Like some folks here, I guess I'm a little bit of a "collector" of speakers.

I also own the Infinity P362 (living room). If my wife had allowed me, I would also have some Martin Logan speakers. :D

I just ordered the Linkwitz Orion, which has a total cost of about $9,000. And even if I were to someday also collect the $22,000 Revel Salon2, I would still keep all my Def Tech speakers.

I enjoy these speakers immensely, and that is what counts in the end.:D

Again, good luck on your little journey.:)

More Possibilities? Saga Continues!

I'm sure the BP7002 differ a little from the BP7001 & BP7000 in the bass output, but I believe the tweeters and midrange will sound just as great. For music, I believe the BP7002 will have plenty of bass.

When I audition speakers, I audition only music - classical music (Mozart) and pop/rock (Eagles, Wallflowers, Smallville soundtrack, Deadzone soundtrack, 4400 soundtrack) - basically just my favorite music that I listen to at home on a regular basis so I know how they sound - weaknesses and strengths.

I've auditioned the B&W 800D/802D/803D, Revel M22 & Revel Salon2, Linkwitz Orion, RBH T3R/P, Dali Euphonia MS5, Krell Resolution One, Martin Logan Vantage, Paradigm Studio 100, and a few others.

In my opinion, only the Salon2 and Orion had the best resolution/detail above the rest.

As far as resolution & detail (picking up all musical instruments clearly), I think the Def Tech BP7001 & 7000 match those B&W, RBH, Dali, Krell, & Martin Logan every bit.

Where the Def Techs excelled above most of these speakers, except the RBH & Salon2, is in the bass.

In other words, I think the Def Tech speakers are very musical. They may not match the "ultimate speakers" overall, but the Def Techs are very balanced overall.

That is my opinion.
Hi again, Acu,

Boy, the spot-on prediction you made about possibilities opening up after the Craigslist 7002 fell through is truer than ever! I ran into my neighbor today (the one who sells and installs the mega-$ home systems), and when I updated him on the story, he said that since he can get several brands of speakers at cost for me (which is about 50% off retail, including Def Tech), that maybe I could sell the 7002's and CLR2300 on ebay or Craigslist for a total of about $1400, and then use that sum to buy a new pair of somethings that would retail for around $3000. This took me totally by surprise, as I was totally figuring on using the 7002s, but since you have such extensive experience listening to the gear that is out there and I know it is all subjective to each of us listening, but do you think that anything else beats the 7002s (for 80% music, 20% HT, as I had mentioned before) significantly enough to warrant the selling of the 7002s? I know you said they can sonically hang in some/most aspects with the Krells, MLs, B&Ws, RBH, and Dali's which are considerably more $, but for $3000 to $4000 retail that I would get wholesale of 50%, is there anything else that I should think about and audition, or instead just know that essentially the 7002s are in that same budget bracket and can compete with some of the bigger boys that cost so much more?

adtg thinks the bi polar def techs flat out kick ***. If i had that budget though I would go straight to some really hi end DIY.

its literally a big enough budget to buy the best OEM drivers in the world and make a world class speaker (with plans of course)

Hi Granteed,

Thank you for the suggestion, and if I was handy enough, had the space (I live in a 1 BR apartment), or had the time to devote, the DIY speakers are a great idea, but unfortunately, I am batting zero for 3 in those criteria!LOL Anything off the shelf that exceeds the 7002s, though?

Ask the Best Buy store and see if they could ship the BP7002 to you for $50 fee = $200 total.

Then you would have a pr of BP7002 for $450 total ($250 + 200). They retail for $2,400, so that's 81% off retail. You can't beat that price.:D

If you sell them on Craigslist for $800 each, that would give you $1,600 + the CLR 2300 = total of close to $2,000?

Why not audition them in your home first?

See what you think of the pair of BP7002s for music, plus the CLR for movies.

Then in the mean time, audition other speakers and see if they sound any better than the BP7002s.

The law of diminishing returns is prevalent in this hobby as it is in any other.

The retail of $2,400 (BP7002) vs that of other speakers retailing for $3,000 or $4,000?

You may find in your auditions, as I did, that even some speakers costing $23,000/pr may not sound any better.

Excellent points. I would definitely live with them for a time to really get a feel for them. Best Buy unfortunately can't ship them, as they are demos and this changes their options, but driving there next week is really not a problem and would be something nice to do in any case.

I think I would only get about $900 to $1000 for the pair of 7002s, and about $400 for the 2300, based on ebay prices I've been following, but maybe Craigslist might bring more, since shipping would not be an added expense for the buyer.

I have absolutely no doubt that you are right, and the idea that the 7002's best some >$20,000 speakers definitely shows that price is not the end all and be all in speakers. I guess it also depends on what speaker lines my neighbor Peter has access to. I will find out from him and will post the options, in the hope that you guys will share your experiences with some of these.

FWIW since you were asking for some suggestions to get a frame of reference.... you ought to see if you can audition any of the following, either at a shop or at a person's home (big list, but the chances of finding most of them isn't so big so find what you can! Some of them don't necessarily fit into the price criteria either so look up and down at different priced models):

Salk V3
Salk HT2-TL
Mackie HRmk2
Harbeth Super HL5
Linkwitz Pluto (only for a smaller room though)
ATC SCM50SL
Focal Pro Solo 6 Be
Atlantic Tech 8200e
Revel F52
Spendor A9

Whether they exceed the Def Techs, I leave to your own ears.

Also realize that while dealer cost is nice, the used market can often get you even better value.
Good point!!
