Thanks guys! Interesting thing is that the cable issue got so much more traffic than the speaker question! LOL!

Well... you wouldn't buy a Ferrari and put hubcaps on it would you? Of course not. So if you have nice stuff... it should all be nice. Nothing says "holy sh*t that's cool!" like big fat cables.

The Canare I used has four wires. The last 8 inches or so are exposed. I braided two wires for each terminal and used black and red shrink wrap for each respectively. I slid that black expandable mesh stuff over the entire fat part of the cable and use wire pants transition between the fat part and the shrunkwrapped braided part and used the nice banannas from Blue Jean to finish it all off.

I'm sure at some point down the line I'll come to realize that I braided the wrong wires together and I'm completely out of phase!

Yeah, coolness is very important.

From the wires to the speakers to the electronics.:D

I can see the looks in my wife's eyes when she sees me braiding speaker wires, and I give her a big grin like this :D:D:D.

Her comment was R--------I--------G-----------H------------T !

2nd 7002 Fell Through, Was Played - Now What?

Hey guys,

I apologize in advance for the long post! My latest drama is this, and any suggestions would be more than welcome:

As I had posted earlier, I have a single demo left BP7002 from Best Buy that was $250 with tax. I had first gone to a guy's house from Craigslist who had offered another single left for $399, and while there, he showed me and demo'd his impressive and extensive array of gear (Classe, Conrad Johnson, Snells, Martin Logans, etc.). He tried first to steer me to buy his Linn 5140 speakers at a good price that he also had on Craigslist, telling me that he thought I would definitely prefer them for my interest in listening mostly to music as opposed to HT. He proposed that I trade him my single 7002 in the deal, along with $500. The Linns were indeed quite nice, as I suspect many speakers would be with his electronics, and I went home to consider his alternative that was supposedly "better" for music. Later that day, I talked this over with my neighbor (the high end dealer/installer) who told me the Linns are way to picky about electronics, that my modest Denon 1911 was not at all a good match, and that conversely, the 7002s are fine for music and the far better choice. I then went out and bought the Best Buy piece thinking I would now match them. I called the Craigslist guy and told him I wanted the 7002 instead. We talked back and forth, agreed on $340, and he said that I could only pick it up later in the week, since these dealings were beginning to annoy his wife. He then kept on coming up with excuses to delay my getting the speaker, but asked me whom I had spoken to at Def Tech for parts that they had offered to replace the damaged top cap and sock on the demo BB speaker. Supposedly this was for a friend of his with a damaged Def Tech sub.

Long story short - he now says that someone picked up the speaker from his garage by mistake, and that he is trying to contact him to get it back. Curiously, a single 7002 that was on ebay for $325 with only local pick up possible suddenly ended with 3 days left to go and no bids. I am sure the Craigslist guy contacted the seller, offered to take it if he ended early, and made a pair to sell for himself, having contacted Def Tech to get a replacement sock that the ebay seller said was torn a little. I also had seen this single speaker on ebay, but stupid me - I felt I had made a commitment to the Craigslist guy and did not want to reneg on a deal, even if I would benefit. Just my own standards, as naive as that might be, but I lost out in the end in terms of being able to affordably upgrade my speakers.

I now am in a bind, as I have only one speaker and a CLR 2300 sub, and the singles on ebay are $700 and $800, with $100 shipping added to that.

I can return the single 7002 to Best Buy for a full refund, but at what point does a seemingly affordable (for me) deal become not so economically worthwhile? In other words, at what $ price does a pair of 7002's become too much to bother with?

Sorry to hear about the reneged deal; I would be very upset.

However, I think the best option is to continue to be patient; you've found that great deal before so I think you can find the same great deal later.

Most of the used prices for the BP7002 single are ~ $800 + s/h.

Acu - do you think that even at $800 for one additional single and the one I already have that was $250, at a total of $1050, do you feel it still worth it to continue? I know they retailed/MSRP for $1200 at the time, so what would you do if you were me? The B&W 601 S2's are not bad, so it is not as if I would be left with garbage, but an improvement would also be nice. Decisions, decisions, decisions!

Continue looking

Ears,
I posted a link to Audiogon with a pair of 7002's for $1200.00. The deals are out there. I agree with Acudeftechguy. Keep looking. You can find deals with some effort.

Hm, do you need floor standers? Maybe you could trade/sell the one speaker you have and get a pair of SM450 or SM350 bookshelf speakers.

Good luck.

The only way you will know for SURE if any speaker is an improvement is when you actually listen to them extensively in your room.

Since the B&W are not bad, I would keep them for now and continue to look for a single BP7002 for $300. Good things come to those who wait.:D

Have you tried contacting all the Best Buy stores and see if you get lucky?

Chris, every time I see you are from Tarpon Springs, I can't help but to think of sponges and gyros. Sometimes, spongy gyros.

I'm originally from Orlando. Well, Hernando actually. A small town North of Orlando.

Thank you Acu and psbfan! You guys and everyone else on this site have been incredibly helpful and supportive, and although this situation sucks big time, I guess I will wait. To be honest, I was so psyched about getting the second 7002 today as originally planned, and was already anticipating all the imagined fun from hearing that big wall of high quality 7002 sound that I feel that big sense of letdown that comes with stuff like this. I try to deal above board with someone (everyone), and I know intellectually that that is no guarantee that they will do the same, but it still smarts. I could almost "taste"/hear those new speakers!

The 7002's inspired this thread a ways back.

I too say hang onto the one you got and wait for another.
Those things sound great.

I know how you feel, man!

Especially right before the weekend and all!

That must hurt badly.

These Def Tech are room-filling, every sensitive/efficient, and can play very loud.

Last night I was listening to my Def Techs. When my 9 yr old daughter walked into the room, she immediately covered her ears and said, "Daddy that is way too loud!"

I said, "So how come you didn't say that when you heard those speakers (Linkwitz Orion) over the weekend in Dallas?"

She said, "They didn't sound loud".

I had to think about that. I am certain that we turned the volume up and listened to the Linkwitz Orions at loud volume - probably 85dB (no SPL meter). The HK3600 volume knob was set to -10dB.

When I play my Def Techs, I only listen to about 85dB (using digital SPL meter), with my Denon set to about -25dB on the volume knob.

One day with a little luck, Acu, I will be right there, too! It's been that feeling of being promised an incredible Christmas gift, only to hear that it won't be coming after all.

I am tracking down a couple of possible leads - one from Bajawaverunner on ebay, who is a factory authorized repair site and comes highly recommended by Chet at Def Tech, and another is from an old posting on ebay that went unsold for a single new 7002 that was $600 shipped, and when I had then emailed the seller asking his best price, replied that he would do $550 shipped, which if he answers me back now, I might "have" to do. At $550 and $250 for the original 7002, I total out to $800 for the pair, which in the end, although not the $590 total with the Craigslist one, objectively it still might be okay despite the $210 difference.

If you're ever down this way, let me know. I have "THE" place for gyros. This little hole in the wall called Plakkas. I've been going there for 20 years for my gyro fix. I've good gyros elsewhere, but compared them, they're all pretenders!

I always look at situations like this as a "blessing in disguise".

Perhaps the one from Craigslist may not be as good as the one from eBay or elsewhere. $800 for the pair would still be a great buy.

Acu - you are right. The situation might have happened to allow something else to occur. Maybe now I will find Revels at a bargain price (I wish, LOL)! Many thanks, and happy listening!

Another 7002 found!!

Hi Acu,

How right you were about other possibilities! After checking ebay for alternatives, the lowest price was about $550 for one. I then called around to all the Best Buys in neighboring states to NY where I am, and finally found a nice one, open box, in a Massachusetts store - almost 4 hours from me. The Magnolia manager was super helpful, and after I explained my predicament, the long drive needed to get it, the motel room for the night, etc., we settled on $150 (yes - $150!!) for the BP7002! A 4 hour drive is no small thing, but hey, to get this kind of a deal, it has been and will be an adventure.

Once again, you and the other guys on this board have been a great help in the search, and my ears will no doubt ring with appreciation for all your encouragement when the speakers are finally together in place!

If they are selling it that cheap, you know they aren't losing money on it, you know how much markup there is on that stuff. Congrats on the great deal, I'd buy a pair of them for that much if I could and sell my BP7006 towers in my bedroom.

Wow, that is awesome. $150 for a single BP7002 is UNHEARD of!

If I can find a BP7002 for $150 or $200, I would buy it on the spot regardless how many speakers I have!:D

We look forward to your story; this sounds like quite an interesting experience!:D
