2nd 7002 Fell Through, Was Played - Now What?
Hey guys,
I apologize in advance for the long post! My latest drama is this, and any suggestions would be more than welcome:
As I had posted earlier, I have a single demo left BP7002 from Best Buy that was $250 with tax. I had first gone to a guy's house from Craigslist who had offered another single left for $399, and while there, he showed me and demo'd his impressive and extensive array of gear (Classe, Conrad Johnson, Snells, Martin Logans, etc.). He tried first to steer me to buy his Linn 5140 speakers at a good price that he also had on Craigslist, telling me that he thought I would definitely prefer them for my interest in listening mostly to music as opposed to HT. He proposed that I trade him my single 7002 in the deal, along with $500. The Linns were indeed quite nice, as I suspect many speakers would be with his electronics, and I went home to consider his alternative that was supposedly "better" for music. Later that day, I talked this over with my neighbor (the high end dealer/installer) who told me the Linns are way to picky about electronics, that my modest Denon 1911 was not at all a good match, and that conversely, the 7002s are fine for music and the far better choice. I then went out and bought the Best Buy piece thinking I would now match them. I called the Craigslist guy and told him I wanted the 7002 instead. We talked back and forth, agreed on $340, and he said that I could only pick it up later in the week, since these dealings were beginning to annoy his wife. He then kept on coming up with excuses to delay my getting the speaker, but asked me whom I had spoken to at Def Tech for parts that they had offered to replace the damaged top cap and sock on the demo BB speaker. Supposedly this was for a friend of his with a damaged Def Tech sub.
Long story short - he now says that someone picked up the speaker from his garage by mistake, and that he is trying to contact him to get it back. Curiously, a single 7002 that was on ebay for $325 with only local pick up possible suddenly ended with 3 days left to go and no bids. I am sure the Craigslist guy contacted the seller, offered to take it if he ended early, and made a pair to sell for himself, having contacted Def Tech to get a replacement sock that the ebay seller said was torn a little. I also had seen this single speaker on ebay, but stupid me - I felt I had made a commitment to the Craigslist guy and did not want to reneg on a deal, even if I would benefit. Just my own standards, as naive as that might be, but I lost out in the end in terms of being able to affordably upgrade my speakers.
I now am in a bind, as I have only one speaker and a CLR 2300 sub, and the singles on ebay are $700 and $800, with $100 shipping added to that.
I can return the single 7002 to Best Buy for a full refund, but at what point does a seemingly affordable (for me) deal become not so economically worthwhile? In other words, at what $ price does a pair of 7002's become too much to bother with?
