Buckle-meister,

Your the Man. :D

Awesome system. What other speakers did you audition before choosing the Mission's?

I guess the traps pick up a bit of dust. However, I wouldn't say that it's particularly noticable and certainly isn't something that can't be dusted away.

I didn't. I'd pretty much set my heart on these speakers as for many many years I'd always fancied a pair of missions. All I had to check was that I was satisfied with their sound.

Of course, I freely admit that in all likelihood I'd probably already made up my mind before auditioning them that I'd end up buying them, but hey ho, there you go. :D

In any event, I auditioned my speakers in a larger, carpeted, untreated room. My own room has, as you can see, a wooden laminated floor, is smaller and (now) treated. As such, the sound is completely different to what was heard in the shop and so the audition arguably could be considered irrelevant. For what it's worth, the sound is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than when I first auditioned the speakers. :)

Now that around two years has passed since buying my system, and from what I've learned from this site and its members, I find myself looking to the future and the possible purchase of a final, set of (for 2 channel) speakers. Time will tell if, by the time I can afford them (if ever), I'd be willing to put the money down for them.

Thanks for the kind words folks. :)

You would truly be THE MAN if you pick up a pair of B&W Nautiluses (or would that be Nautili?).

No offense, but those speakres are BUTT ugly. How about something from the 800 series? Probably sounds just as good, and looks WAY better.

That is of course your opinion. He probably likes the way they look, as do I. He didn't buy them for you, he bought them for himself.:D

True, but one must be warry of others opinions. Such as a future Mrs. Meister.

From what I understand the B&W Nautilus speakers are hand made to each order. I don't think they would sound like the other 800's B&W has to offer.

I friend of mine has the B&W 801's. Nice, but I prefered the sound of his Wilson Watt/Puppies.

I would love to audition a pair of Nautilus.

Of course it's not just the speakers. If you're going to spend that kind of money on speakers (built to order) then you'd be looking at serious money against amps in order to drive them; the flagship Nautilus have active crossovers so separate amps are required for each driver and B&W recommend a 500W amp for the 12" driver alone. To top it off, it'd all be a waste of money without engaging the services of a professional acoustician to sort out the listening room to truly hear what was comin' at ya!

I've heard that (a pair of) the Nautilus alone come in at around £30,000...you do the math.

None taken. Remember Sheep, looks are a matter of taste; I have it, you obviously don't. :D ;)

They may well sound as good but to me, the 800Ds (which I've heard) aren't particularly good looking (too lacking in finesse/elegance/grace); even if I had the money for the 800Ds, I'd never buy them based on looks alone.

Each to their own I guess. :)

This is the amp my friend uses to drive his speakers.

Krell 700 watts per channel.

Your right. It's a FPB-700cx two channel amp. :D :D
Yeah. It's physically impossible for it to pump out more the 700 wats x 2. Actually, it can't even do that. More like 600 MAX.

(unless it runs on a 20A line)

Wow, you must be selling bridges now instead of designing them. :D I've always thought they were cool looking but you would need the proper room for them to look cool in. Unfortunately I don't have that special room but I hope you have one. It's always nice to have something to shoot for.

I don't have a suitable space for them at present but will do when I have a place of my own. Whenever I've moved flat, my decision to accept that particular flat has always hinged on the layout of the living (read listening) room. This would be no different for a home of my own albeit I'd give more consideration than normal to the rest of the place.

Yeah. I'm not saying I'm definitely going to get these speakers. If I get that sort of money together and am serious about spending it, I'd certainly look to audition other types of speakers. I've never heard electrostatics before and suspect that I'd love their sound as I tend to think that I favour detail when listening to music. In this respect, I get the impression that electrostatics may be in a league of their own.

You have to understand that it's not that I like expensive things, but that the things I like are typically expensive. I have an eye for quality; you could hide the prices of objects laid out in front of me and the chances are that the item I would like the most would also be the most expensive. I'm cursed with good taste. :( :D

Actually, you'd need four mono-block amps for each speaker since the Nautili has got separate input for each driver. (quad-amp)

EDIT: now THAT would be one killer stack of Krell amps...........drool.

I have the same problem. :D It helps to have a wife that's always holding me back from spending too much money. Besides the obvious benefits of getting married and having children my wife has been the best thing for my finances. ;)
