I have to do a comparative/controversial speech in public speaking, and I wanted to do something audio related. I'm thinking of doing the pro's and con's of audio compression (mp3, not dynamic). The only problem is that the topic is a little limited to put into a 7-8 minute speech. Anyone have any suggestions on topics?

You don't think MP3s have dynamic compression? Why do you think CDs sound so bad, lately?

I thought they were two completely different forms of compression. You could take the most dynamic classical recording and then save it in the MP3 format, in the smallest possible file size. Would the dynamic range be compressed as a result? Just wondering...

Personally, I don't think the muggles either know or care about this subject. If you want a really effective presentation, stick to something near and dear to their hearts. ...something they are aware of that affects their lives every day.

And, if you really want to get into public speaking, Toastmasters International is an invaluable resource in this area.

We can't do a major controversial issue like abortion or gun control, so I figured that I mind as well do something that I enjoy researching/talking about. I think people will find it interesting because it'll be something they haven't really thought about. I could be give someone their audioholic start

I am a little concerned though with being able to squeeze a 7-8 minute speech out mp3's. I'm still open to suggestions

Well 7-8 minutes is about 3 pages double spaced 12 point font probably a tad bit less, but you get the idea. I think 3 pages on why CDs can be better than mp3s would be cool. The hardest part of speaking is selecting a topic. So just pick something research it and don't spend too long arguing what to discuss.

Remember to be concise. 7-8 Minutes is a pretty short speech so make it count.

I suspect you could probably get to 7-8 minutes. I know it sounds like a long time, but it goes fast. I do a lot of presenting and the hardest part I have usually getting it DOWN to the time limit.

The keys are a passion for your topic (or at least sounding like it), not carrying on in a mono-tone voice, and relating the subject to the people. Make them understand why they should listen to what you have to say.

It is an interesting topic (to me) as I can sometimes hear the results of the compression in less than stellar audio reproduction. Especially on Satellite radio and sometimes news reports on the radio where they pulled the sound bite off the net (compressed).
