PS5 for Blu-Ray player?

I'm just setting up my home theater. I'll be using my computer for outputting digital files. I don't currently own a Blu-ray player. I plan on purchasing a PS5. The question is... get the Blu-Ray edition and use it as my main "player" or save the $100 (get the PS5 digital edition) and use that money towards a dedicated Blu-Ray player? I'm not even sure I'll (often) rent discs, but I get the impression if I want to watch a movie with all the bells and whistles (4k / Atmos / HDR ) its not easy to stream that - just too much data.. ?

just to clarify - the ONLY reason I'd get the disc version, is for playing movies.

Well, if you want to play 4K blu-rays, you can ONLY do it on the disc version, silly. :p You will save money and space by getting the disc version.

I'm a big fan of having a separate player. They aren't really all that expensive to get one that does just about everything. I have the Sony X700, selling for 150 these days.
Consider, too, that the Laser Block can have a 3-5 year life expectancy. Not will, but can. That’s an expensive replacement if it’s the laser of that PS 5. ;)
Either way, this is the true definition of YMMV.

I would wait for reviews before assuming PS5 will be an awesome UHD player. It might end up that way though.

What's life without taking a little risk every now and then? I'm sure it won't be a bad player, but it will have annoying limitations that will be dealt with in future firmware updates like every blu-ray playing console before it.

The PS4 had an excellent Blu-ray player, there’s no reason to expect the new version to be any worse.

I liked the player in my original 60g PS3. Loved that thing. Anybody remember Playstation Home? Good times.

FYI, Sony owns Blue Ray so I’d hope they would get that part right. Also PS5 and Xbox series X both cost more to build than they sell for, they make up the loss on subscriptions and game sales.

Sony has always had a great track record with Lasers. My first CD player back in 1990 was a sony... then my second... in fact... I've never not owned a CD/DVD/Blu-Ray player that wasn't Sony. They always work, and work well.

My preference simply comes from letting the Game Machine be a Game Machine and watching Movies or listening to Audio Discs on a separate dedicated drive.

Nothin' wrong with that at all. Love my UBP-X800.

For quite a while my PS3 was my main bluray player. I eventually went to stand alone units as I discovered I really don't want to play games much (I used the GT5 game a bit but eventually stopped playing). I didn't realize they had special versions of the console now to indicate it could play a disc, tho.....

They are moving toward downloadable content and getting away from physical discs. I like the idea, myself. Especially now that the consoles are so powerful in terms of processing and graphics... getting the moving parts out of the design should make for a very good product.
I'm going to have to wrestle with the upgrade choice and whether I will still want to play any of my old PS4 games on the 5. I love my Fallout, Skyrim and GTA. If those end up available to download, it would simplify my choice quite a bit.

As I am not usually an early adopter, I am waiting until after the holidays at least until I consider buying. I would like to see a stable system and hopefully a true fix for the HDMI thing before I commit money to anything new.
I'm d@mn sure not going to rush out and buy a new TV or AVR/AVP so really, the 2.1 thing won't even affect me for a few years. Still... I would argue this is not primetime ready yet and I can't help but feel the bleeding edge of technology is fast overstepping what our senses can process. While I greatly hate load times, having a game in SSD storage is probably the biggest advancement... along with just having better processing overall.
:)

It certainly seems like at least half of the stand-alone Blu-Ray players out there are made by Sony.
It also seems like (in Canada) if you want the full features of 4k / All supported formats / Atmos / etc - that the price is heading past $250.
So, if inventory ever becomes available, looks like I'll take the Disc version.

Yeah Sony predominates in my house....the PS3 plus a couple S5100s, and an S6700 (and an Oppo).

Just what is the premium to you for buying the disc version?

Disc or digital games both cost the same. I have a 12 terabyte HD for my Xbox so I don’t worry about loosing or scratching discs

$130 CAD (which converts pretty close to the $100 USD price tag)

I seem to end up buying Sony stuff all too often as well... though I still hold a grudge for them selling me a BetaMax VCR :p
