PS3 DVD upconvert vs Toshiba A3 HD-DVD

I recently picked up the A3 I have been wondering how good the PS3 upconverts regular dvds. I only have 300 on regular dvd and hd-dvd (came free in box) so here are some comparison pics. My tv is a Panasonic TH-50PXU plasma. The PS3 is set to output 1080p and then tv downcoverts to its native 768p. A3 is set to 1080i and once again tv downconverts to 768p.

Pictures were taken with Canon Rebel XT D-SLR on highest jpeg setting with no flash.

Actually, I'd like to see the A3's upconverting vs the PS3s...I think most already know that upscaled DVD is not going to approach the same level as BD or HD-DVD. I felt that the PS3 was about as good as my Oppo 970 and 980, with just a hair better color.

Ok I will post the same pic with the A3 upconverting.

Edit: Couldn't edit last post so here are the 2 side by side. PS3 and A3 regular upconvert.

That photo of the A3 upconversion is a bit out of focus...

I though that at first so I took the picture like 10 times and also set the came on top a pile of books on top of the coffee table and they all look the same.

Well it's obivous that the camera itself is out of focus (the bezel of the TV is blurry). I know my A2 doesn't upconvert DVDs like that. :D It does an excellent job.

The PS3 has better upconverting that the A2.
Firstly the PS3 upconverts to 1080p. It also passes all the HQV benchmark tests.
The XA2 is far better for upconversion than the A2.

Thanks for that. I should have my A2 tomorrow so I will be able to do some comparisons as well between the 980, PS3 and A2 sometime soon.

I think the A2 does a pretty good job of upconverting, I think my Oppo971 does a good job too, but since I have a DLP tv, it wasn't the best option. My PS3 just arrived at my house, so I'll be able to do some comparisons in which upconverting player looks better to me very soon.

Why don't you try outputting one of them at 480p? You are doing double scaling that can't help your picture. You would also be better off with the A3 set to 720p. Interlacing things is a sure way to screw things up.

I find I get my best picture from the TVs scaling on my Parent's 768p panasonic plasma. All this scaling talk has everyone all confused. Your TV's scaler HAS to be better than any image scaled twice, and is likely much better than an image scaled, then interlaced to 1080i, then deinterlaced, then scaled again. Does fish taste as good the second time you heat it? No!

The best comparisons would be to set both the PS3 and the HD-DVD to the same output.

Try 480p
Then 720p
Then 1080i
Then 1080p

That is, if you have the time.

Yes CLEARLY the bezel is out of focus, or has camera shake for the A3.
So certainly this is NO contest.

This whole thread should be stopped before people start believing in those pics.
Heck, I could do the same with the BD-P1200 against a standard DVD player (no upconversion needed):rolleyes::rolleyes:

EDIT;
It is clear camera shake.
Look at the lower left corner of the alledged A3 upconvert.
You can clearly see a diagonal red line. More than likely a component single LED.;):p

PS3 dvd upscaling vs HD-A3

Are there anymore thoughts on this? I'm waiting to see input on the PS3 upscaling to decide whether I should pick up the PS3 alone for BD play and DVD upscaling or buy a seperate upscaler, like an Oppo 980H. I'm running a Panny 42PX75 display. I would consider an A3 but I it's my beleif that BD will lead the way for a while.

I think it does an ok job, but not as good as my Oppo. I would keep the oppo but there isn't any more room left in my rack after adding the PS3 and getting the Toshiba HD A2. So if you want a good deal on an Oppo 971H let me know, it's also posted in the classifieds section.

Thanks for the input, but I'm looking to get a "one system does all". I've got a lot of DVD's and upscaling performance is very important. I've heard the A2 does a great job of upscaling, but since you have the PS3, how does it's upscaling ability compare to the HD-A2? Is it close at all? Is it better? Worse?

I haven't done an A B comparison, but they both seem to do pretty good. I guess I should use the same disc on both.

No offense intended but is 300 a good DVD to test upconversion with??
I'm not slamming the 300 DVD or the original poster but with so much grain I wouldn't blame any device for doing a poor job upscaling that.

I would think that maybe the Superbit 5th Element would be a better disc to test the upconversion with. ... or am I wrong??

that or the Spiderman 2 superbit, that is an excellent transfer.

Instead of taking the picture via camera, is it possible to take a screen capture of this via your computer? Also, try to use a lossless format when posting the pictures like PNG, instead of JPEGs. JPEGs can introduce additional artifacts that won't be representative of the actual image on screen :)

But thanks for sharing the pix!!
