PS3 Beating Up Japan
DVR kit and Yakuza 4 cause surge in Sony's homeland.

March 25, 2010 - PS3 is on fire in Japan thanks to two key releases: a peripheral and a sequel.

For the week covering March 15 through March 21, data from ASCII Media Works shows the system topping the hardware charts for the first time in three months. PS3's 45,000 units sold represents a jump of 69.5% over the previous week.

The reason for the system's sudden surge are Torne and Yakuza 4, both released on the 18th.

Torne is a Japan-only kit that converts your PS3 into a DVR. The sub $100 kit sold 62,000 units and sold out at many shops, according to ASCII's data.

For Yakuza 4's sales figures, we turn to separate tracking firm Media Create. Its sales report for the week put Yakuza 4 at the top, with 384,000 units sold. That's a bit above Yakuza 3's debut last year, and four times the week's number two title, PSP's Gundam Assault Survive.

PS3 is currently at the 4.95 million unit sold mark, ASCII reports. It will likely cross the 5 million mark in the next two weeks.
