My manual with my new player states progressive scan only works with component output. It will not work with HDMI. I thought progressive scan was what I wanted to use?

I guess they assume that if you are using HDMI that you have an HDTV and wouldn't run it as anything less than 720p.

Forgive my ignorance, but are you saying progressive scan is 720p?

OK. I see. (I) is for interlaced, and (P) is for progressive. But why wouldn't I want to implement progressive scan?

Not sure what product you are discussing... It is possible, however unlikely, that it only outputs 1080i via HDMI - that would not be progressive, yet still high definition.

More likely, however, the component outputs 480p, and HDMI outputs 480p, 720p, 1080i, and maybe 1080p (regardless of what they say)... again, I have no idea what product this is.

Thank you! It is an upconverting 1080i player. Yamaha DV-S5950.

I figured since my TV would upconvert 1080i to 1080p, this $50:D unit would hold me over until the blu-ray/HD war calms down.

So, I just need to leave progressive scan OFF.;)

You still won't be getting the same picture quality of native 1080i or 1080p. There is a very noticeable difference between upscaled and true high def material.

But upscaled is still "good enough" for the most part. Looks almost as good as HD. It's not HD, and you can tell it's not HD, but it's pretty darn good anyway/.

Yes, if that is an option, or, if the menu has 1080i for output, use that.
Why not experiment and interrogate the TV menu what signal it is receiving:D

I know exactly what you mean. I'm happy with upconverting players for the most part :)

Sorry guys, but those who say upscaled is "good enough" are fence sitters to me. The difference is much more than "noticeable", and no it does not look almost as good. I have yet to see an upscaling player that looks almost as good as actual quality HD material.

The best thing I've seen PQ wise is Discovery HD. Is Blu-Ray a huge improvement over that?

Blu-Ray will not be an improvement over quality 720p/1080i broadcasts on your display.

I am just trying to make the best out of my $50 player.:) You have to understand, I am going from a regular dvd/dvd-a player with a 27" tube TV, to an up-converting 720p/1080i dvd player with a 42" 1080p LCD. I am certain I will be plenty satisfied for a little while.;)

I had a 8-track player on my Sherwood seperates in the 80's.
I kept my cassettes until cd's stopped skipping.
I kept my VHS until the movie store stopped renting them.
I kept my tube TV until it quit.
I live on the edge.:D

So you don't have any VHS you want to watch, or the kids? Do you use DVR to record and watch TV programs?

Actually, I have a pretty good Hitachi VCR that I pulled out one day to put on the system. I have all of Woodstock '94 on VHS. The audio is decent. I think I was up for three days recording. I used to stay up from time-to-time.:p

I will probably remove it now that I have another dvd player to add, and the new monitor on-the-way as well.

As for kids, my wife and I are expecting our first in a couple of weeks.:) It's a girl.:D

Funny thing there. Just swapped the digital box for a HD unit to go with the new monitor. Lost all of my good concerts I had on there.:(

My post from another thread that will work good here too.

Just got off the phone with an excellent source, and it seems many were right here.

1) A HD-DVD on a 720p set will be far superior to a dvd up-converted by a 1080i or 1080p up-converting player.

2) There is not much, if any, noticeable difference between a dvd that is sent to a 1080p TV from an entry level dvd player via HDMI verses an up-converting 1080i or 1080p player.

3) HDTV(Direct TV from source) is far superior to any up-converted dvd.

Ha! You sound like me, although in my case it's more about finances than anything. My wife and I have been married for 13 1/2 years and have yet to buy a tv, because whenever my parents buy a new tv, they give us their old one. They just got their 1st HDTV (Sony 42" LCD), so we just got their Sharp 36" CRT, which by the way, has a pretty dang good picture for what it is.

However, I don't expect they'll be replacing the HDTV any time soon, so next year (hopefully) will be the year that we buy our 1st tv, which of course will be HD.

Congrats on the baby! Our 1st was a girl too. She's now 6. 6 1/4 if you ask her :). We also have a boy who's almost 5.
