Progressive Scan Color Drop?

I have a Sony Progressive Scan DVD player and a JVC CRT Rear Projection tv that scales and displays all incoming signals at 1080i. I am,running component cables from the dvd to the tv. I have always set the DVD player to progressive scan mode. I happened to turn off the progressive scanning last night and I found the picture to be much better in the color department. The colors were much more vivid. Turning the progressive scanning back on, the color is much more muted.

My question is: is this supposed to happen? Should the color level drop that much in P.S.? My tv has a "natural cinema" mode that is always set to "auto" and it is supposed to correct film-based material, but when I toggled this feature from on-off-auto, there was no difference in picture. The only difference was when I switched the P.S. on and off on the dvd player.

Calibrate the set for progressive and leave it in progressive. What you are percieving as "better" may just be incorrect contrast and brightness levels.
