Preamp for Yamaha A870

Hi- Unfortunately Cant have a sub in this house. when i Do the YPAO , i sets all the Speakers as Large except the Front Heights , which is small and XO of 80 Hz.

What's WRONG with the current sound quality of your speakers?

Most people, especially apartment dwellers, don't listen that loudly. So most AVRs will do just fine.

I would look into your setup. You mentioned YPAO. Did you try to listen in THROUGH mode (no auto room EQ)?

A lot of people think that buying an amp will somehow miraculously improve the sound. But it usually does not.

Hard to imagine you need additional amplification if your WAF of volume is low as well as the apartment situation. I'm with ADTG as to whether there are any audible issues at this time to consider, likely all the external amp will bring is capability for higher volume.

Hello - There is nothing Wrong with the current set up but wanted to explore whether I can improve on the quality.
The quest was always for a great vocal and adequate bass. Just yesterday night I was watching Major Crimes on Prime Video and found that the Cellar DSP shuts out the Centre Spkr but the output is quite good.
I have been reading a lot on the forums about Pre-amps and External Amps and wanted to educate myself , do some research on what those are, in this lockdown.
True that as an apartment dweller, I have restrictions But from this post itself I am learning so much, Thank you.
on the YPAO, I set it as Natural But I will check on the Through Mode.
To be Honest I was looking to miraculously improve sound but then I guess the miracle would only happen if I get a whole lot of things correct. I guess I am looking at a clear dialogue and good bass and atmos- probably over-expectations

I wouldn't worry about that sort of things because most of the time the DSP is doing its job, it's usually the media contents, the way it's mixed.

In your area, can you find a dealer that offers 10 or 30 days return if you don't like the product, like our Bestbuy in North America? It would be easy to try out the X3600H. You will be using only 5 channels, so if you set the subwoofer crossover to about 100-110 Hz, you would have more than enough power for your current setup in your apartment room. If the 3600 fail to improve sound quality for you, nothing would and then you know for sure that you A870 is fine, meaning spend the money on something else that matters.
