Poiner Elite VSX-82TXS Setup and Adjustments

I have now ordered the Elite VSX-82TXS and read the instruction manual twice with questions.

I have purchased and is on the way or already here and in the box the following:
Pioneer 5070HD plasma
Panoamax 4300-EX
PS3
Comcast HDTV/DVR box made by Motorola with HDMI
I have in the box the Polk Audio RM20 5.1 with the RM10 sub. The sub does not have an line level input on the sub, just two input and output speaker connectors and and left and right RCA jack.

I want to be able to hook up all components with ease and can do so with your help.

After reading the reviews and some recomendations I have the idea of changing the defaults on this unit as follows:

Digital Video Conersion: Off (THX recommending)
Surround Back System: Off (5.1 system)
Speaker system>
Front: Large (Since the source is the sub and not the amp)
Center: Small
Surround: Small
Sub: Yes
SB: Off (5.1 system)
X-Curve -0.5 (Room smaller than 400 sq ft.)
THX audio setting 4 ft (?)
Surround Back channel processing: Off (5.1system)

I have HDMI cables to run all this. Also setting the resolution feature in the av parameter set up to 720p.

Is there a better way to hook up the speakers for the MCACC speaker setup.

Should I turn off the video converstion.

Should I select the source output to 720p and just pass the info through the reciever in the switching mode only.

I have all this about to hit and I want this to be a realatively easy set up once everything arrives.

There is too many tweaks to mention and curious what are your favorite tweaks or does staying with the defaults best.

I have in the box the Polk Audio RM20 5.1 with the RM10 sub. The sub does not have an line level input on the sub, just two input and output speaker connectors and and left and right RCA jack.

Not quite following you here. What are the left and right RCA jacks? Those would be line-level inputs unless the other Polk speakers don't have normal binding posts or spring-clip connectors for speaker wire and must be hooked up with RCA connections.

Regardless, if you do not connect the sub via a line-level input and instead connect it to the front right and left speaker outputs of the receiver (with the front speakers then connected to the sub), you are correct that the front speakers would be set to Large BUT you then have to set Subwoofer=NO.

The two inputs on the back of the sub are (1) left and right filtered jacks that look like rca jacks. On the back of the 82 there is only a single output. Not sure if it should be split and hooked up through this and then set sub to yes or hook the speaker wire to the sub left right input, left right out of sub to the front and right front speakers and set them to large instead of small. Sorry hard to follow. I am still looking at how to tweek this thing when I take it out of the box. I am worried about the upconversion issues also. THX

Setting everything up correctly the first time is a daunting task, even for the well educated. Backing-up MDS’s comments: all speakers set to small; subwoofer=on,yes; crossover @ 80Hz or higher; one coax RCA cable from receiver sub out to either L/R input on sub; crossover set to max on sub; sub gain set @ midway for starters.

If you’re connecting all sources via HDMI then up-conversion is unnecessary.

you will have problems

i have the same receiver and have had problems with set up and not keeping. i have a yamaha 2500 that is a ton better. it just doesnt have the hdmi. you will have problems with the length of time the unit takes when you power on your whole system...when you call tech support they are nice but just a bunch of rocks sitting there fielding calls. a different response each time i call. for the money the receiver should have had another internal amp which it doesnt and it doesnt like another one hooked up. i have one hooked for my outside speakers and have had problems for ever with them. changed amps twice. i like the fact that the tech support says they will fix the problem and send a box to transport and of course they didnt. what a mess. lets all spend that amount of money and have the customer service not know what to do...Do i sound bitter? uh yeah. i will check my settings tonight and let you know what i have. next response wont be so negative...sorry.
