Please help deciding which sub to go with

Hello guys,

My room is 15.5x20x7.5' and is semi-closed.
80/20 Movie/Music usage
Will be upgrading from a monoprice 10"
Looking for more of the "visceral in your chest feel"

I need help deciding which sub to go with that will give me the "best" all around performance
Mostly likely will start out with one and add a 2nd one w/i the next year

These are the options I am considering:
1. Monoprice 15"
2. Paradigm Defiance x15
3. HSU VTF-3 MK5
4. HSU VFT-15H MK2
5. SVS PB-3000
6. SVS SB-4000
7. PSA TV1512

Every sub you listed is perfect for ht. I just have to point out that "in your chest, punched in your face" bass is in reality 30-80 hz mid bass impact. Multiple ways to induce that without buying factory boxes.

Boy they are all excellent subs and I don't know everything about all of them but I have been checking out the PB-4000. Wow it's a beast and I think for a very reasonable price. I have the PB-2000 Pro but my goal is the PB-4000, well greed dual PB-4000.

Play it very loud and be as close to the sub as possible. The chest thump you're looking to get occurs at very high volume. The Paradigm has the most output above 30hz in that list and with proper placement would give you the best chance at getting what you're looking for.

For cost, the Monolith 15" (ported) and the HSU 15" subs (ported) are going to be the better/dollar subs for home theater. Hard to beat HSU for sheer value.

We have similar room sizes and I can tell you that 2 HSU vtf2 12” subs are plenty for your size space and you’ll save Cash and floorspace that way. Almost every one else will swear you need several large 15”subs when it’s not necessary.
But if you’re a bass head the larger subs make sense Unless WAF is att play.

So I s/w the sales manager from a HT install company and he stated my room was too small for a 15" and recommended I get a "High End" hard hitting 10" x2.
My room is ~315squar feet / 2400cubic feet

He recommended the JL line (e110 model) and the Paradigm Defiance line (x10).

I inquired if I could get another one of my monoprice monolith 10" subs. He did some research and stated while the monolith has the power, it does have the capacity to move air like the JL or the Paradigm could (? excursion value)

What your thoughts regarding this?

LOL, that guy is a goof. The Monolith sub can probably move more air than the JL Audio sub or the Paradigm sub. And LOL to being too small for a 15"! He is either hugely misinformed, or he is just pushing the brands he can get a markup on.

He mentioned the monoprice moved about 12mm and the JL could move about 60mm. I am having difficulties finding more information excursion value

Just look at the build on the Monolith 10" driver:

Typical of someone who's just trying to get max income from the job.

This is why its commonly best to just do it yourself after you learn more. Or, get a specialist for home theater if you have the green and want the easy button approach but you don't get them through a contractor, you get them from forums like these and AVS, etc, who are the go-to people for HT builds and setups. Get info from them and then do it yourself or have someone do it.

My living room is 16x14x9 with two wide open doorways. I'm %80 movies and %20 music.

I had a PB4000 then upgraded to a PB16 Ultra and I still felt I was missing that mid-bass slam.

I now own One Power Sound Audio TV1812 and the sound signature compared to the PB16 is night and day. IMHO the PB4000 & PB16 always sounded Muddy to me, they both lacked that chest slam during movies like John wick & Fury.

He is a REW sweep in my room ( no EQ) yes I have some nulls, but a 2nd sub will fix that.

I get usable output down to 9.5 hz

The TV1812 gives me plenty of ULF, mid-bass and TR ( makes my couch shake) I'm on a concrete slab and I sit about 11 feet away from the sub.


I highly suggest to order a couple subs and keep whatever sounds/ feels best in your room.

Bigger subs are just as much about deeper extension than they are about louder/cleaner bass. You can never have too much, you can always use the headroom and EQ it to smooth it out.

I have dual PB4000s in Extended mode, on concrete and an open concept floor...no issues with chest slam and tactile experiences. My couch sways and my hairs tingle...they are aligned and EQd with minidsp 2x4 and I get nice extension to 12hz from 10' away.

Too small for a 15" Man, that's a riot. My car has a 10" sub in each door...

For what you'd pay for two JL E110's, I'd get two Monolith 15's and keep the change for other toys.
