Pioneer VSX-74 and Toshiba HD DVD Problems

Good morning all,

Well Christmas has come and gone and I now have a brand new Toshiba HD DVD to include in my home theater. I assumed that it would be a sime plug and play since my system was already had a DVD player working through the HDMI on the receiver. But no joy and 6 hours of a Friday squandered away.

Here is the equipment:

1.) AV Multichannel Receiver: Pioneer Elite VSX-74TXVi
2.) HD DVD Player: Toshiba HD DVD HD-A30KU
3.) TV / Projectors: Sony VPL-HS50

From what I have read everything should be compatible. I searched the internet to see if there was a firmware upgrade to the Pioneer but could not find one.

So any thoughts? Anyone have the same equipment with success? Thanks in advance.

Yours is the second post with this type of issue since Christmas. I bet this is a HDCP compliant issue. The pioneer is not giving the Toshiba HD the right repeater handshakes. You might be lucky and solve it with HDMI 1,3 version cables from Blue Jeans.
Do this test. Connect the Toshiba HD directly to the TV via HDMI and see if it works. It likely will. If it does then your Pioneer is not sending the six digital keys to the Toshiba correctly or frequently enough. If there is no software up grade for your Pioneer that will correct this you will be SOL.
This whole issue is a mess and the Unsatisfactory people who inhabit Hollywood are responsible. Please see my previous posts about this. I bet we will have an avalanche of this in the near future.

Have you upgraded the firmware on the Toshiba? This is a must, from other posts I have read on the Internet regarding the A3 & A30. These DVD players appear to me a little touchy with the firmware they ship with.

The lack of compliance could be with either unit. However the Toshiba is a new HD device and will be held to a high standard by the enslaved technicians of Hollywood. If they say it is not draconian enough, then a huge lawsuit follows right away. The receiver is the older unit and more likely to be out of synch with the latest standards. People do not realize that these HDCP rules change continuously and without a notification of a version change. Everybody needs to understand this issue and scream about it and help to bring about legislative change.

The fact is Hollywood really don't want HD devices connecting to receivers etc, just displays. That makes it tougher for the pirates.

At times the sequence that you turn on the components matter as has been posted by other such problems. Try to turn on the Tosh first, Pio 2nd and Sony last? Experiment with the sequence. It has helped others.
But, it is a b.... to remember and do this.

Dog's dinner

The above might work, but I doubt it.

Any one reading this thread needs to get interested in this issue. The fact that someone previously had this combination work, means nothing. There are now eight revisions to this HDCP DRM by my count and this does not include the errata of which there are a significant number. Digital content protection LLP are already taking comment for the next version. They are making what was a good interface into a dog's dinner. They are creating a modern Tower of Babel.

The manufacturers are compelled to use the latest version with new product.

We need to roll up the carpet on Digital Content Protection LLP.

Please just take a look on their site. Even better Email them and vent your spleen.

http://www.digital-cp.com/home

There stuff is just too complicated. Look at their lists of specifications. As an example look at this errata.

Remember all this nonsense does not make life easier, look or sound better, but you are paying for it.

Now everyone please take a look at the electronic frontier site and see what needs to be done to call a halt to all this nonsense.

There is a firware update for the Pioneer Elite models 72 and 74 txv models. It is supposed to help with some connection issues but mainly fix an LFE issue through HDMI. Remember the 74 cannot pass 1080p so only set it to 1080i and see if that helps. I am able to use my A2 with my 72 and the only issues I had was the lack of LFE issue which is now fixed.

how do you go about getting the firmware for the 74? does the unit have to be sent in? my hdmi 1 input went out about 10 months ago on my 74 and tonight my input 2 acted the same way for about twenty minutes, i couldn't get picture or sound and the hdmi light just flashed. it could just be a hand shake issue but i would think that it would've happened at least once before but this is the very first time which leads me to believe the input is goind bad somehow. i've never had a single issue with the second input til tonight. someone had told me about the firmware awhile back but i never found anything on it since. thank you

Why not call Pioneer customer support and ask them about it? They may have encountered the problem before and have a solution. In the meantime, you can connect the Toshiba via component video and digital audio.
