The VSX-84 will up convert if you use hdmi to your video out source and connect your video in source using components or s-video. The VSX-84 Is not up converting hdmi in to hdmi out it only will pass it.

I have had two of these units returned with hdmi problems and a faulty component jack. Also I see a lot of talk around regarding all sorts of bugs using the hdmi ports. In my opinion the audio quality out is good, the up conversion is ok at times, and Pioneer help line stinks. I was going to buy a Denon but got talked into the Pioneer at Tweeter. I must admit I have never liked any Pioneer products in the past manly do to the quilt and durability. If you decide to get one make sure you buy it at an authorized dealer or you will not receive the factory warranty.

Good luck

Like Fabrikator, I too am waiting for this review before going ahead with purchasing an Elite receiver. The 84 is likely not in my budget, but the VSX-81TXS is, so I'm eagerly this comprehensive review by the Audioholics team, that hopefully glosses over the current Elite line before getting specific about the 84.

I've been waiting for awhile for the opportunity to upgrade my little entry level receiver. Money's starting to burn a hole in my pocket. Please, publish this thing sometime soon, OK? :D

Edit: I don't know how I missed the review for the 82 which was posted in October.

XM HD question...

Quick Noobie question...
I picked up an 84 over the weekend to replace my HK 7200. I currently have a DTV HD Tivo hooked up via HDMI. I see that this receiver is ready for XM HD 5.1 surround (simply add an XM connect and play antenna)
My question is this: All the 800 channels of DTV are XM music stations. Can I get the XM HD surround thru any of these stations, or do I HAVE to connect this special XM antenna to receive the HD satellite feed and pay for another subscription?
On a side note, I have been VERY pleased with this purchase. I was very concerned upon removing it from the packaging as it weighed about a third as much as my HK and the power cord and remotes appeared pretty cheezy. All my concerns and doubts went out the window as soon as I ran the auto setup and fired this baby up! Very clean, dynamic sound. So smooth, I could listen for days on end. I LOVE all the features and I don't regret not buying the Denon for a second. :D

I just got one of these to replace my very old Denon 3600 and I am VERY happy so far. Only one annoying click that happens when you change sources that my Denon did not to.

Otherwise it is great
