Listening to them right now. Just finished the first track on the Telarc SACD with them (already listened to a lot of it on my mains for reference) and have to say two things: this disc is amazing and these speakers do sound good. I cranked it much higher than I normally would just to see how they would take it and no issues. The neighbors are home or I would crank it even louder, but I wouldn't like it if they did it, so I won't do it to them. Even last night the couch was vibrating pretty good :) Everything sounds good on them; as before, no nits to pick with their sound. From the quiet passages, brass, flute, strings, even the canons sound good. I did not hear any obvious break-up in the highs on heavy cymbal crashes. This is in stereo analog direct from the 83SE.

Swapping in my modified A/V-1s for a bit to see how they compare. Same sensitivity but a little lower -3dB and 8 Ohm instead of 6.
I have similar observations from my speakers. Everything sounds great some things are not as articulate as they might be on higher end speakers, but there is a real presence to these speakers, like you are right there. Which in my opinion makes up for some minor issues.

With my A/V-1. I still can't get over the fact that these use a 4" midbass.

So interesting observations between them and my A/V-1s: the triangles sound more natural, however at times they actually get lost in the mix on the A/V-1s. They are easier to pick out on the BS22s, but don't sound quite as realistic; not exactly sure how to quality that? They sort of sound like they are farther away on the A/V-1s, but with the BS22s, they sound like they are in the same room but behind something. The canons sound more robust and "filled out" on the A/V-1s, as opposed to a bit of slam on the BS22s. I think this disc has the highs pulled back just a tad too (recorded at a distance? or mastered that way) but it sounds just a bit tamed on all three sets of speakers at the top end during some parts. Will try them with some other things and specific passages tomorrow if I have time, but I am not sure what else needs to be tested, these things hold their own :)

This disc is so good I almost can't stop listening to it :D Very pleased with the recommendation and glad I picked it up.
Hi, I think this is the very first time I've visited this thread (I think I miss a number due both to time, but also because I rely so greatly on new posts to catch the latest dialogue), and just wanted to guess /opine that I bet I would think your disc sounded all the more realistic to ME because of the way your "triangles sounds". I am under the impression that I like minimalist recording technique; I don't like it when they play around so much with the engineering that it sounds like musicians are immediately Star Trek transported to different parts of the stage, or when certain instruments like triangles or whatever image right in your face for a short section, but then all of a sudden are transported to the rear again or something. I think consistency is key, because it's not like we are jumping seat to seat during a classical concert, JMO.

The SACD was supposed to be giving you the impression that you were sitting in the best spot while listening to the orchestra. It was also mixed for multichannel from the review I read of it on SA-CD.net, and it does sound very enveloping and more front than rear heavy (the way I prefer it to sound), with no "gimmicky" effects. The canons do fire left, then right then across the whole front, which is nicely done - obviously, they didn't record that indoors  Certain passages you might hear the flutes off to the left and the strings to the right, sort of how it might be live if you were sitting close. The review says they did not record this as a single performance, so it was engineered to achieve the effect, but they did a good job of it. I don't like over-engineered sound either.

If you want to hear an excellent one, try this one. Even in stereo, it gives you a good sense of being there, and seems like they kept the "messing with it" to a minimum.

Sounds like they are better sounding speakers than the P362 then. That Telarc SACD was almost unlistenable through the 362 regardless of whether I use the 3910 or BDP-95 and amps, it just can't do too many things at once.

I think the cabinet of the P362 falls apart pretty quick (i.e. resonance) of it gets busy at volume. It sounds like the ones Alex modded would hold up pretty well.
Of course, why mod if the PIO's come with good rigidity? Solid curved cabinet (not kerfed and bent like some budget speakers) at this price point is a sweet feature.

I still have the 163s, I'd throw them up there but I am getting ready to go out of town tomorrow. They seemed to be fine cranked up when I was listening to them in this setup except when I pushed them while they were full range. I pushed the BS22s even harder and they took it; just didn't check them full range here.

The curved cabinet likely helps a lot on this one, because they feel solid but aren't very heavy. Comparatively, one of my A/V-1s weighs as much as the pair of BS22s.

I just ordered the Brubeck cd as well and plan on getting the BS-22's unboxed this weekend for a little ABCD Vs the Zaph 5.2's, Polk rt25'i's, & E41b's. I will switch them through a Niles hdl-6 selector. I plan to run some test tones through them all to get them level matched at 80 DB's using my rat shack meter and noting the volume level on the denon for each pair. Does this sound like a semi fair way to go about this comparo?
Cheers, Mac

Just dragged the empty boxes up to the attic for storage. Guess that means I'm keeping these speakers. :D

I'm about ready to do that myself, as soon as I get back to town and hook up my 471. The problem is now what do I do that the speaker shopping is over?

Just got back from a few days away from the speakers. I was hoping that I hadn't imagined how good they sound, and I hadn't. The sound is seems even bigger than I remembered. Time to hook up the new receiver and hope that the sound gets even better.

What do you have in mind for a new receiver?. I vote for a Denon. :D
