Philharmonic Bookshelves

Any1 looked at them seriously (heard them or saw any graphs)? The floor standers might be a little too big for my apartment with 15x16x8 living room. So I thought why not use Philis monitors as mains, or even better front 3, or all 5.

I know that Phil1 monitors are around $800/pair, I guess it would make Phil2 monitor $1200/pair. And then maybe throw a woofer upgrade into Phil2?? (should be like $200 extra).. call it Phil2.5:)... that would make an HT1's equivalent in ugly box. Might be a way to go for us apartment dwellers.

But will they sound anything like HT1? (i mean drives are the same, crossover too, cabinet different). Will Phil2 monitor need anything extra?

On the side note would a granit stand be good for a monitor? I have a good friend who can make those for me cheap, just not sure if it's a good material.

And as totally crazy idea what if use subwoofers as stands for monitors?
2x rythmiks + 2x phil monitors should make a hell of the front towers, for $1800 - ???? it would make a dual sub system.. or am I missing something here? The only problem I can think of is that the sub placement is different from speaker placement. Could use that black hole stuffing as decoupler and to get the right heights for tweeters.

Just my thoughts on how to make a good system for the least space and $$$...
any input is welcome

Yeah, but they all about the towers. Those towers kinda scare me because of my room size and the planar midrange driver.

I'm sure those guys will see that thread here:)
and what makes you think Denis makes bookshelfs?

Hi The Phil 1's don't require a lot of power. 60 clean watts will do it. The amplifier will have to be comfortable with a 4-ohm load, however. The same would be true for the SongTower, although the ST is more efficient than the Phil1. What kind of center do you need? I have an MTM horizontal design, but the cabinets won't be here for some time. I also have a monitor that would match the 1's. They both use the same Fountek ribbon that's used in the Phil 1. The MTM uses a 5" version of the SB Acoustics woofer in the 1. The monitor uses a 7" woofer by Seas, and can be had in either a .5 cu ft cabinet for use with a sub, or a .75 cu ft cabinet that will deliver a good bit of bass without a sub. I've attached a picture of the .5 cu ft monitor.

and from other posts it looks like he will make a bookshelf with ribbon upgrade too, but I think it will be .75 cu ft.

The drivers and crossover are not the same at all. The HT1 uses the world class Seas Excel W18 mated to a RAAL 70-20XR tweeter. The Phil bookshelves use the more affordable Seas Prestige ER18 + Fountek Neo3CD tweeter. Excellent drivers, but they're really only a fraction of the cost of the cost no object drivers in the HT1.

That said, they'll have a strong familial resemblance. The pricier drivers might have that last level of resolution but I can't imagine huge differences in the tonality and soundstage.

Here is a thread you may be very interested in, however:

Unless it's a 12 x 12 x 8 bedroom, there's no reason to be scared of a tower. I mean, the drivers might want 7-8 feet to properly converge, but most rooms tend to give you that much distance from the speakers.

I concur on the drivers. Those are both very solid and well worth the money.
I will be in the corner cowering from those phil towers. :D

I prefer bookshelves for small rooms personally.

Wow on the post, maybe once I get a garage and some free time I'll do something like that. Definatly worth reading. Thanks

From what I understand the Phil2 monitor will have a RAAL tweeter, probably the 70-10D. And I was just wondering if Denis could upgrade the stock Seas ER18 to W18, then the drives would match the HT1 and crossover should be close since it's made by Denis:). I wonder if stock cabinets could use some special stuffing to make them sound better. But all those upgrades will probably make the price like $1400 - $1600/ pair. I guess I'll have to bug Denis on that.

lol, I guess there is no way to cheat the system:)
The Neo 8 midrange on the Philharmonic Towers should be extremely resolving if you do want to get to that last level of performance. Of course then you might start wondering "what if it had a 12" woofer like the Salk Soundscape  "
