PCM Format???

I use my HT system for watching a lot of live concert DVDs. I always choose stuff that's been recorded in 5.1 So, I just picked up a DVD of King Krimson in the early 80's. Remastered in '04, in what the packaging says is, "Dobly Digital" 5.1 surround sound. However, when I check the signal that my amp is receiving (Yamaha 650) it merely says PCM. Only the Pro-logic settings are available on the amp which tells me it's not a digital 5.1 disc.
There is no audio settings menu at the top of the disc. I've never heard of PCM. All I know is that it sounds like sh**t!! Only the front center and mains are firing. No rears or sub.
Has any one ever heard of this format??

I'm pretty sure PCM is what CD uses. You may have bought a bootleg CD-R/DVD-R

PCM (pulse code modulation) is a digital scheme for transmitting analog data. The signals in PCM are binary; that is, there are only two possible states, represented by logic 1 (high) and logic 0 (low). This is true no matter how complex the analog waveform happens to be. Using PCM, it is possible to digitize all forms of analog data, including full-motion video, voices, music, telemetry, and virtual reality (VR).

Although it seems you have bought a pirated CD/DVD, it is possible to encode 5.1 DTS on a CD-R (and I really wonder why they dont do it on the VCD).

You can burn some by downloading the wave files and using a CD-R, although most are in swedish language.

Can't help ya with the PCM thing, never use it.
How is this King Crimson DVD. I can't imagine Fripp allowing anything out there that isn't excellent. The guy is a musical genious.
I have found some concert DVD's really lacking in sound quality though, almost to the point of bootleg sound. A good KC DVD would fit nice in my collection though.

The DVD has some great classic cuts from "Discipline", "The Beat" and "Three of a Perfect Pair" However, this has to be a pirated DVD. The video is very grainy and of poor quality. The audio is also very substandard. Too bad because the performances are fantastic. I'll keep it for this reason. But, I'm still miffed that the case states Dolby Digital 5.1 when it's really 1980's VHS.
