Um OK, so I took the dive and just went for the Ultra since I knew I would always wonder why I didn't. Picked it up from BAX today and muscled it into my place, but my question is how did ya'll get this thing out of the box without dinging it up?? I am strong by all conventions---train five days a week for the last eight years, bench 330---but this thing is freaking big and slick to handle.

I know this sounds stupid but I know everyone else here had to do it....Just wondering if anyone stumbled upon an idea that keeps the boxes intact for further use short of dumping it out on its side---Its late and I already worked out for three hours today....

I don't have an Ultra, but I'll offer a suggestion based on other large and heavy objects that I've had to get out of a box.

The general thing is that you open up one side, turn the box over so that the open side of the box is on the bottom, then lift the box up and off of the sub. Cut the tape and open up the tabs on one side (preferably the bottom if you haven't already opened the top). You need to keep the cardboard tabs on the open end out of the way. One easy way is to bend them over against the sides of the box and tape them down. Then, turn the box carefully over until the open end is now on the floor. You should then be able to lift the box off of the internal contents. If you opened up the bottom end, then when you pull the box off, the sub will be right side up. Otherwise, you'll need to turn the sub over.

I hope that helps.

Hey, I forgot two things in my previous post:

1. CONGRATULATIONS!!! An Ultra. Oh, baby.

2. Of course, we'll appreciate pictures!

getting something like that out of the box is only half the struggle. Many people reccomend dragging it across the floor on a blanket or something once you have it out of the box. Personally I think two people is easier, But having muscled around my two subs by myself I can tell you its not easy any way you cut it.

And thats coming from a person who carried a dishwasher up two flights of stairs by myself when I had someone to help me. ;)

well, easiest solution is two people lifting it out of the box. third person holding the box down.

it doesn't really matter how strong you are when the item is bulky. :)

here's how Adriam Mills did it.

oh btw, pay attention to the dials at the back and the driver at the front when muscling this yourself. those two things will be the first to bite the dust when something goes wrong (aside from the finish of course)

Hey thanks guys....I finally just decided to have at it and got some soft bath towels on the floor put the box on its side and slid it out....much like Mikec's post above. Once i got it out of the foam packing on the bottom I could actually pick it up fairly well despite the slick protective sock they put on the thing. But man this thing is stout....not to mention is that rosewood finish beautiful....:D

I will certainly post some photos in the coming days but for now I think I have had it....was not planning on doing this so late, but I had to see it...thank you all again...

BTW, this was one major reason that I decided to try the cylinder! I live alone and wanted to be able to move it myself. That, and while I used to work out five to six days a week for over a decade, I haven't for years. So...I'm a little wussy now. The cylinder fit me just perfect. I do envy those wood finishes, though! I remember when SVS offered the wood finish on their cylinder Ultras. They were something like $5k though (IIRC), so I still would have gotten the cloth. But...darn, they looked nice!

That's crazy, I never knew they offered the cylinders in the wood finishes--long before I got into home audio I am sure. That would be pretty gorgeous, but again heavier than sin. It would be interesting to see if they would ever do that again or if demand and cost just don't allow them to...

Very Nice Sub; my most favorite SVS and Adam gives a great way to get it out of the box. ;) ;)

But what are you going to do when you decide to get a Gotham g213 ? :D
They weigh 360 lbs

Sorry gentlemen....the past few days have been crazy as I am a pianist/student and have had lots of rehearsals and gigs....I actually finally got the Ultra set up tonight--it has been sitting in the corner for the past three days(such a shame)...eq'ed it with the SMS-1 but I won't be able to do some real listening test as I don't think anyone in my loft building will appreciate any earthquakes at midnight...even the SMS sweep was a bit much at 11:30....lol

In any event I will most certainly be posting some pics and impressions later this weekend...although from what little I was able to discern this evening I am going to be floored with this thing....

Thanks for the update! A true audioholic would forego all academics in order to enjoy an Ultra...but I'll cut you some slack. :D

I look forward to the pics and your impressions, but don't rush yourself. Take time to enjoy it (as well as get your studies and other life taken care of)! It's always great to get info from a fellow audioholic, but we all need to enjoy our "real" lives. :)

Floored??? If you live in a loft with adjacent apartments, it's very likely that you neighbors will knock you out cold if you let that thing loose.:D
