Optical cord not working

I recently bought an optical cord for use with my xbox 360 elite, which has a direct optical output. The cord runs from there into my stereo's optical input. My (crappy) stereo is an old Koss KS3102. There is no way that I know of to assign the digital inputs to a specific a/v channel, so I assume the sound is supposed to just come through and override the other inputs. But clearly I am doing something wrong. Anyone have any ideas?

Edit: I realized that I indeed can set the a/v channels to either analog, coaxial or optical. Unfortuantely there is still no sound.

Did you also set the 360 to output via optical?

It turns out the crapily made 360 is at fault. The audio dongle doesnt fit properly into the port so you have to find the sweet spot for it work.

I doubt it's the 360s fault, I've never known anyone else with that problem, but I have personally (and known others who have) run in to problems with some inexpensive optical cables that don't sit well in the jacks on most electronics.

I'd have to agree, it is the cable, not the unit itself.

You have to be careful with those things. If you bend them too acutely, the little optical fiber inside breaks. The break can be completely invisible because it's inside a housing, but light is either inhibited or doesn't pass at all. If you know someone else who has a working cable, try trading them and be careful when you handle them.

No, the cable doesnt go straight into the xbox it goes into a dongle. I didnt move the optical cable at all but rather the dongle in order to make a connection. Not that it matters but it should be known that M$ is evil.

Besides this problem you are mentioning it one virtually no one has heard of. I know for a fact that I have set up45 xbox 360s in surround for stupid friends who thought "because 5 speakers are playing its surround" while it was 5 channel stereo and I have never run into this type of problem just like other on the forum.

I've got the 360 premium unit and the cable has to be aligned a certain way to fit into the receptable. One end of it is flattened and the other side has a ridge. It snaps right into place. On the new cables, sometimes they have a little plastic cap covering the optical pin to protect it during shipment. You might want to double check that.

They also sell optical calbes that are round in diameter which eliminated the aligment process. That could be one option for you also.
