Oppo versus all the rest

Power processing and gaming apart, there's gotta be a clear reason WHY thousands of serious AV nuts - all over the world - prefers Oppo by a long shot, though... but of course, YMMV.
They probably all buy it because they see people nutswinging over it on the internet. It isn't any better than PS3 other than maybe a bit more user-friendly since it is designed to be a disc player and nothing more. That is why I have one.

I think it's real advantage is that it is a universal player. If you just want blu-ray, then PS3 or budget BRP is the way to go. If you want a reference disc-spinner for music, then Oppo has the edge.

I have PS3, but still drool over the Oppo.

How about the stock PS3 "remote". Clearly inferior to the oppo.

Also, what if you want SA-CD and DVD-A playback. Only the original PS3 can do that. But guess what, the original PS3 can't bitstream, only LPCM. But no biggie to me.

And, for the record, I own an original 60gB PS3, at the time it was almost certainly the best available. I bought the blu-wave IR remote, just for the USB dongle, so I could program my universal remote to operate it. That was the biggest hangup for me.

Bottom line, PS3 is not superior in every way to the Oppo.
They have a new bluetooth remote out for the PS3 that I like a lot better than the original. It has the ability to be programmed to operate basic TV controls also. I really have no need to control the PS3 via IR, but then I don't typically use it for movies either.

NO PS3 can do DVD-A, period. You will only be able to listen to the DTS tracks if the disc has them.

I have 3 PS3s and my Oppo 83 easily bests them in ANALOG audio performance.

D'oh. You are correct, PS3 can't play pure DVD-A discs, thanks for the correction.

I see the advantage of a bluetooth remote, but the big disadvantage is in trying to program a universal remote for the PS3. Most (do any?) don't do bluetooth, thus I have an extra dongle to use my universal on it.

And yeah, I really want the oppo for my 2 channel separates rig.

I use a dongle on my PS3, but it is missing some basic functions.... like power on and power off.

Yup. PS3 has it's limitations as a BR player, any way you slice it.

I believe Harmony and a few others have that capability. The early IR adapters did not, since they were basically ported over from the PS2.

Could be the case. I've had mine forever. My PS3 hasn't even been turned on for at least a year. haha

PS3 can do Netflix 5.1DD+ and Oppo 95 cannot. I hardly use my 95 for anything other than 2 channel stereo analog out. If I waited until now I would probably go with the Sony BDP-S590 or 790, sell all my DVD-A but keep the PS3 for Netflix, games and as a fourth or fifth BDP. I still feel good about the 95's top notch DACs but I really can't say it sounds better than the digital out to the AV7005.

Good to know. The thing for me is, I am planning on building some stereo pre-amps and amps and speakers in the near and distant future, so I would really like a rock-solid source component with great analog section.

In that case the Oppo BDP-95 may be for you as it probably has the best analog outputs, balanced and unbalanced, all for $1,000. The specs of those DACs should easily convince your brain that it sounds better than the 93. Those who prefer to stick with HDMI should stick with the 93 or go with the Sony models if they don't plan on playing DVDA.

The Oppo isn't all it is cracked up to be. Just go buy one of the cheaper recommended players.
Is there another player out there that does what the Oppo 93 does (I see no point to the 95, especially given reports that it has a fan whereas the 93 does not, though I wouldn't know because my old Oppo 83 does everything I need a disk player to do) and costs less?

If so, that product may merit consideration. Or, if one doesn't need a player to do what the Oppo does (spin SACD's and DVD-A's, which for me at least get a lot more play than any movie would) then one can definitely go cheaper.

One should, however, also consider that Oppo's after-sales support is leagues better than, say Denon's/Marantz's. Oppo understands how to treat customers who buy premium products, whereas most of the industry does not.

I think the Panasonic's new top of the line DMP BDT500 is a better contender against the Oppozilla beast than than any other in its price range.
No SACD playback makes it a non-starter for many music lovers.

PS3 destroys the Oppo in every possible way. It's not even close, nor fair to the Oppo. PS3's processing power is unmatched. There's a reason why Criterion uses PS3s.
What happens when I put my DVD-A of R.E.M.'s "Green" in a PS3.

And the fan noise, my God. I could not have a video game box in my living room because of that.

Really? Which model of PS3 are you referring to? Mine isn't noisy, original phat 60Gb model.

And, did you ever hear the original XBox 360 models? Like a frikking jet turbine spinning up. Seriously, that was the loudest part of my entertainment center, and I have a tower PC in it too!

When was the last time you looked at the back of the 83? It has a fan.

Depends on where you locate the unit. I have mine inside my rack which has doors on the front and an open back. If it is a warm day, it could be an issue with the older models, but not the Slim.

I have a slim and two 60G units. The Slim is a LOT quieter than the older "Fat" models.

If you never heard an original architecture XBOX 360, then you don't know what a loud piece of electronics sounds like! On top of that, I would wager a 100% Red Ring of Death rate on those models, it will happen eventually. I've had at least 2 RRoD, maybe 3, I can't remember for sure. And EVERY one of my friends, relatives, even people that I met playing online has had AT LEAST 1 RRoD.
