Oppo versus all the rest

If I had a Ferrari I'd drive it to work BUT I still wouldn't buy an OPPO...I had one of the original units DV971 and sold it after a few months and bought a panny. Since, I've purchased the same unit that Peng recommended (bdp bx38)and I'll second that recomendtion.

John is right though about the PS3 being better with Netflix (I think it was him who made that point). The BDP380 is great with Netflix in terms of video quality but it won't do 5.1 and the control (fast rev/fwd/search etc) sucks when compared to the PS3. Since the OP said he didn't need streaming so yes I still highly recommend the 380 or any entry level Panny to him. Something not important to me but it may to the OP, that is the BDP380 is much faster than the Oppo 93/95 in opening, closing the tray, and it seems to spin up to play quicker too.

Yeah I noticed the load times with my new player were a huge improvment over my older panny dm35. To me the OPPO was a novelty must have item at that time and I overpaid only to be underwhelmed. The direction OPPO has taken with the newer or more recent BDP units they've lost me as a return customer strictly because of the cost. As for using Netflix or streaming video I am still holding off for the timing being...as for the PS3...again XBOX is our gaming choice.....

I think the Panasonic's new top of the line DMP BDT500 is a better contender against the Oppozilla beast than than any other in its price range. It may be at the lower end of the high end player category but that makes it one of the best deals out there in the Amazon jungle. I couldn't be happier with my BDT500.

I've been real happy with my Sony BDP-S790. It has some nice features (dual-core CPU, dual HDMI out, 4K upscaling) for the price ($249.99).

I'll throw my hat in the ring too since I haven't seen it mentioned. Got one of the new Samsung BD-E6500 units a couple of months ago and have been very happy with it. It does have 3D and a few other features you say you don't need, like wifi, but I have it hardwired to my system same as you would do. If you choose to upgrade your system, it is a player you can grow into. It features a SMART TV hub and gives you access to most anything you could want. iPhone remote app is mediocre, but workable. Overall, for 169 shipped, I thought it was a good bargain. Looks stellar too.

I know, that is why I posted. This is the latest model and I think they did a decent job with it. At least I haven't had any issues so far (touch wood).

Yeah, I've had bad Sonys and good Sonys too, so everyone's mileage may vary. So far the best luck I've had is with Panasonics.

For what it's worth, I have a Oppo 93, and a 95.

I love 'em. I use them a lot.

I will say that the 95's analog capabilities weren't worth the premium for me, forcing me to 7.2 instead of 9.2. The DAC in the BDP 95 isn't audibly better than the DAC in my A2010, and I just prefer the 9.2 enhanced.

Otherwise, no regrets at all. Quite the opposite.

How about the stock PS3 "remote". Clearly inferior to the oppo.

Also, what if you want SA-CD and DVD-A playback. Only the original PS3 can do that. But guess what, the original PS3 can't bitstream, only LPCM. But no biggie to me.

And, for the record, I own an original 60gB PS3, at the time it was almost certainly the best available. I bought the blu-wave IR remote, just for the USB dongle, so I could program my universal remote to operate it. That was the biggest hangup for me.

Bottom line, PS3 is not superior in every way to the Oppo.

Sadly they paid for THX certification and THX happily took their money to allow Lexicon to slap their badge on the front panel - apparently without actually testing to see if it met the core requirements of which we would suppose any THX Blu-ray player would have to adhere. If THX is doing this with Blu-ray players, it makes you wonder what they are doing with A/V receivers and other THX certified products. Has the THX badge, for select existing clients, simply degraded into a marketable commodity with no real backing or validity?
