Oppo review

Check out the detailed video review of the new Oppo over at the secrets of HT site:

The analog component outputs are just as good digital section and will still upconvert to 720p or 1080i. Based on their reviews, the Oppo blows away other entry level upscalling DVD players in the $1-200 range.
I would also avoid the $200 Oppo 971 for analog, because its analog processing uses a different chip, does not upscale, and has mediocre performance.

Since you mentioned no HDTV, make sure that your current display has a component video connection and will accept a 480p or higher signal. Otherwiese, you will see no benefit with the DVD upgrade.

Actually, like most other upconverting DVD players the component output is limited to 480p (due to CSS DRM). To get 720p/1080i you need to use the HDMI.

One thing it does which is cool, though, is output 480i via HDMI - very rare and helpful in some cases.
