Could I get away with sr605 or do I need the sr607. I may need preouts down the road for another amp, and I also plan on having a rf remote with base.

From the look of the rear panel, neither of the two Onkyo's you mentioned has analog pre-outs.

The 607 has more HDMI inputs and has dual sub pre-out. Overall, the feature set is more or less equivalent with some being margainally better than the 605, like the Audessy Dynamic Volume and Ipod connectivity.

That said, the 607 weighs slightly less than the 605. It might be argued that the 605 has a more robust amp section, but if this will make a perseptable difference in an actual listening situation is unlikely.

So, there you have it.

Onkyo doesn't include pre-outs on their receivers until the 7 series and above. If you will definitely want an additional amp in the future, you'll have to buy a 7 series model.

Well damn, I am really having a hard time figuring out what I need receiver wise. I want to have basically a 5.1 system, but have a zone 2 for stereo that consists of about 5 other speakers around the house. I am thinking I may need an amp pre out for the zone 2. I am also trying to find a compatible last year's model so I can find a smokin' deal on one on ebay. I guess my goal is to say... I did this all myself and I only spent ____. Any suggestions?

The Onkyo 6xx models have powered zone 2 capability as well as a zone 2 pre-out (they do not have pre-outs for the main 5 channels). If you are going to drive more than two speakers in zone 2 and let the receiver power them, they will have to be wired in parallel and you'd need impedance matching volume controls or a speaker selector (all speakers would play the same stereo source).

If you wanted to play 5 separate channels on the speakers in zone 2, you'd need to connect another multi-channel receiver to the zone 2 line-outs. Zone 2 is stereo only, but the second receiver could turn it into 5.1 using a matrix decoder like ProLogic II.

I am ok with zone two only being capable of one channel. And you are saying that that zone 2 has pre outs for an amp if necessary?

Yes, they have zone 2 pre-outs for a separate amp to power those speakers.
