Hi Bob,

Feel free to send me a PM if you aren't comfortable mentioning sellers on the forum. I'm brand new to audioholics but am seriously considering one of these two new Onkyos to replace my excellent but aging Integra 8.4.

You mentioned street prices of $1000-1300 for these two receivers but I'm curious as to where. Ebay has the 906 around $1600 Canadian plus shipping, taxes and possibly duty. The 876 seems to be about $300-400 cheaper.

Can you steer me towards a seller or two (either internet or bricks and mortar) where I might be able to get the best possible price?

Much appreciated,
Rob

Geez, just noticed that the last post on this thread was about 6 weeks ago - sorry to reliven a stinky old thread. My bad!

Don't worry about it. This thread is not that old (only last month).

Besides, these receivers are still very alive and active.

But I really need to know if you're Canadian, cause it's a different ball game on either sides of the border.

Soon that I know that, you'll be on your way to the closest store to buy your new baby. And you'll be a happy man too. And don't worry about prices here, we're not stuck in jail or something. It's the internet, and we live with it.

Here's the one to get in the USA.

* @ http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/ONKTXSR876BLK/Onkyo/TXSR876-7.1-Channel-Home-Theater-Receiver-black/1.html

:) IT'S THEE BEST. And only $899.99 USA.

I figure that you're Canadian. In Canada, all the bricks & mortar dealers are nuts.
You best bet is from a private sale. You don't need the 906, it's a waste of money.
The 876 is the same receiver, lesss the toroidal and Ethernet jack from the 906, that's all. I got the 876 myself, and that's all you need. Better value.
* Just be careful when shopping online. Best from authorised dealers, but tougher in Canada. If you can get the 876 for about $1,200 cdn or anything less, you're doing fine. That's max., $1,200 cdn after all taxes paid, and any other shipping and duty charges.
That's it, that's the best I can suggest for a Canadian about this specific model, and it just happens that you pick the very best one, the 876. :)

Hi Bob,

Hope that helps!

They seem to have thier balls in a knot about only shipping to US customers for this product. Seem to be getting that a lot.....oh well, will keep digging.

Ya, just like I said, it's tough for us Canadians on most audio components.
You need a CONNECTION. And I just don't have that connection.
Once in a while I got an e-mail by someone that found a reasonable deal, but he has a connection (friend or family). When the new replacement models will show up (around late fall), for the 876 and 906 (807 & 1007), then the prices will drop, and the 876 might be available at that time for about $1,200 cdn.
Or it will certainly be at clearance price, but only next year (2010). :(

Good luck anyway & have a good night sleep back East. (I'm from Montreal originally).

Sometimes you can get good deals from certain 2001audiovideo stores in Mississauga and Oakville but not in Toronto. I don't know why but that's what I found. If you go into one (try several) of those stores and tell them the maximum you will pay I bet you have a good chance to get it for 1,200. Again you may have to try several stores because not all of them have the 876 in stock and not all of them will deal.

Onkyo TX-NR906 Update

I finally got around to re-checking and re-doing the mic set up. Not to diefferent. I added some dB's to the center channel. Overall, I like the receivers design & GUI. But, I still don't hear the punch (dB's that I heard with my older HK) I will add more dB's to each speaker next week to see if I can tweak it more. If anyone can advise ref the settings that this beast has to make sure I am not missing one. two or five items?

Listening Angle: wide or narrow?
DSD: Direct direct: Yes or No?
Speaker Impedance: I set to 4 Ohms for my Mirage's.
Speakers set at 80hz. Sub at 120hz. (It set my fronts to full band, & surrounds to 150hz. I thought with a sub, I want them to set to small, but there is no option?).
THX Options?
THX Sub, yes or no. My two subs are not rated THX, does it matter?
"BGC" it has dashes or off...?
Loudness plus: yes or no?
Preserve THX settings? yes or ----?

Whew........

Any suggestions. I will probably try bi-amping in about a month. I have to order more cables. The center speaker seems to be a challenge though, it's a beast and I think it's new placement 2' away from the wall & flat screen on top of my consol may be to close.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Here you go, just for you Larry.

Hi Larry,

First, it's very important that all your settings are right.
Did you read the Audyssey Setup Guide anf the Audyssey FAQ?

1. Listening Angle (for T-D) = Wide.
2. DSD (from Direct Setting: Delay Enable) = NO.
3. Speaker Impedance = 6-ohm (Default Setting)
4. Speaker sizes: * Front = Full. But you can set them at 80hz, if your sub is a good one, which I presume it is. So, go for 80hz.
* Center = 80hz (There is no Large and Small). Please, check your manual, it is well indicated.
* Surrounds = ..... You set them at 150hz? Are they really that small? I suggest that you get bigger surrounds that can go down to 80hz, at the very least. Ideally, they should be set at the same crossover as your other speakers.
5. Low Pass Filter for the LFE Channel only = 120hz.
6. Double Bass = OFF.
7. THX subwoofer = NO.
8. BGC = OFF.
9. Loudness Plus = NO.
10. Preserve THX Settings = Don't matter, just say NO.
* Lock (Lock Setup) = Unlocked (We're not finish just yet).

You think that's a lot. You ain't see nothing yet.

Larry, it seems that you are having some tough time to understand the manual. But it's OK, I can help, fortunately. :)

I also thought that I gave you the first two commandments of the Audyssey Audio Bible. Here again, or for the first time:

1. Audyssey Setup Guide.

2. Audyssey FAQ.

>>> Don't forget to set your mic on a camera tripod, asnd do the full eight (8) measurement microphone positions. <<<

[[[Your subwoofer own adjustment controls are properly set?]]]

* Also, make sure the Re-EQ is set to OFF (Using the Re-EQ function, from your manual).
* And the Late Night should also be set to OFF (Using the Late Night function, from your manual).
* And DSD (Listening Mode Preset), should be set to Pure Audio..
* Also, Immediate Display (from OSD Setup) should be set to OFF.
* Lip Sync, xvYCC, Control: Power Control and TV Control; should be all set to OFF.
* Also, for serious listening and before you're finally setup, set The Equaliser (from Equaliser Settings) to OFF.

I'll get back to you about your center speaker.

Also, you can ask all your questions in my thread, called:
* Everything Important To Know About A/V surround Receivers, But Were Afraid To Ask. *

*** Take your time, read the links very carefully, obey all the rules, follow all the firectives to the letter, and Love Life; it's only the beginning, and it's gonna get a whole lot better for you AUDIO wise, that will propulse you into the seventh dimension of Surround Sound Bliss. :)
Trust me, I'm a PRO. ;)

Cheers,
Bob

I've been rocking the Onkyo 876 for about nine months now and loving it. Got it pushing a Klipsch 7.1 system (RF-82's, RC-64, RS-62's, RB-61's, and RSW-10)

Great Receiver , very pleased, no complaints
