Hi Bob,

Thank you for the clarification. I think I have the PS3 and receiver setup pretty well now. And, I have the new speaker stands in place (and have run Audessy again.)

I'm very happy with the sound, but since the new speaker stands were added, it seems like the speakers produce a much less bass than before. The highs are better than ever, but the "ooph" seems to be gone. Do you think lowering the crossover setting of the front speakers might help?
Thanks,
Eric
* Eric, your Boston Acoustics HD8 have an 8" woofer, right?
Only for these two, try the crossover at 60hz, just to check if you like it more.
If not, because these, if I remember, are very old speakers, I will recommend that you shop for new speakers. The time has come Eric, and it's a very important step, the most important actually.

Eric, sorry if my memory is short right now on that one, but I believe your X-overs are at 80hz and 100hz, right?
NO, don't lower them, only the two front mains (try 60hz).

You need to make your speaker's stands heavier and stronger. Are they wood ones or metal ones? Can you add Shot Lead in the tubings if they are?
If not, you have or to use Blu-tack to the top plate, so your speakers anchor better withy the top surface.
Also if your room is carpeted, I highly recommend spikes under the stands, also for better anchoring.
Here's a tip: On the bottom plate, add some weights, heavy bricks or lifting weights, or marble rocks, or anything heavy. Even on top of your speakers, you add weights too. The heavier the stands with the speakers, the better the bass definition.

Cheers,

Bob

Hi Bob,

Yes, the HD8 has the 8" woofer and the crossover for the L/R is set for 80hz. The center is set at 100hz. I'll try 60hz on the L/R.

The HD8 models are about 17 years old, but I just replaced the foam (did it myself, so maybe I did it wrong?)

The stands are made of wood and sit on granite tile. About 75% of the room is this tile and about 25% is covered by a throw rug.

I agree, the time for new speakers / sub is near, just not in the budget at the moment :)

Regards,

Eric

Eric, enjoy the present moment. And put some money aside for better days with better speakers, that's all what you can do for now. :)

I am also in the hunt for this receiver and have been following this thread. I have SR601 from about five years ago and was wondering what has changed that i would notice off the back. I mean my receiver is still pushing very good but i just think it is time to upgrade the thing because i am upgrading everything else. How would you compare the two performance wise?

Hi,

The main thing is all the new technology advances from all these years.
Nowadays, you need to upgrade your receiver every couple years or so, to keep up.

You won't notice much as for sound quality wise between the two, but you'll surely appreciate all the benefits, audio and video wise from HDMI connection.
It is a huge leap into high resolution, that is certainly worthy of upgrading.
Once you experience it, you won't go back, that's for sure.
So, just do it. :)

Cheers,
Bob

Because the couch will reflect unwanted vibrations into the microphone's response.

You put the mic (on a tripod) at the main listening area, where your ears are normally situated.
