Onkyo shutting off at 60?

My onkyo 605 receiver is shutting off on its own when it reaches 60 on the volume nob. I read up on the internet this might be the "PROTECT" thing that shuts itself off from pushing itself to hard... I've had it over 60 before though and I thought it might have to do hooking my center up, but I turned the center off and it still happens. Does anyone know what a problem might be? Its a brand new receiver, and its not over heating or anything...Thanks

Disconnect all speakers and subwoofer (or shut the subwoofer off and disconnect all speakers) and power it on with a source playing. Take the volume up to 60 and beyond if it allows it to continue working. If it works fine the cabling for the speakers is faulty, by manufacturing defect, over use, or accidental short, or the speakers are faulty or impedance is too low.

Report your findings and we will get you sorted out.:)

X-serie speakers from Av123.com SLS towers, X-LS surrounds, and a X-cs center and a PB-10 sub.

Hmm...Well I did what you said and it will go above 60...I plugged it all back in and it goes above 60 no problem. Why would it do that all of a sudden, but work after plugging back in? That is weird.... Thanks for the help.

You must have had a short somewhere, just one strand of wire spanning from one positive binding post on the speaker or subwoofer to the negative would have easily done this. I like that most all equipment has this kind of safe guard, to prevent damage to your equipment, without that protection it would eventually break the receiver or the speaker (most likely the receiver). Shorts make output devices get extremely hot until they burn up.

I am glad you got it sorted out, good luck with all your audio ventures.:)

You may have had some wires crossed (touching positive and negative). This can trigger protect mode.
