Onkyo receiver, speakers suggestion ?

Hi all,

I have finally decided to acquire an entry level Onkyo (tx-sr506) and I am beginning to set it up with my old technology equipment (32" CRT trinitron TV) and regular 420p DVD player and a satellite receiver (5.1 but non HD).

I currently have 2 speakers only and would like to find out if they will be any good with this Onkyo, and if possible receive suggestion on which speakers to get in order to complete my setup for 5.1 sound.

So here goes, my 2 current speakers are : Technics SB-2744 (April 1988)

8 Ohms/200W
crossover frequency 3000Hz/6000Hz
output sound pressure level 91 db/W (at 1m)
10 inch woofer cone
4-3/4 midrange cone ferrofluid
2-1/8 cone ferrofluid


I'm looking for rear speakers, a center and a sub to complete a 5.1 setup.

Should I look for matching speakers in the back ? how can I select the other speakers so that I will get a harmonious home theater experience ?

It may difficult to timbre match those speakers on the front with a center channel. For surrounds I don't consider timbre matching to be important. But I suggest you getting 5 speakers and a sub and using your mains as a B speaker for music. Next question is budget?

With those speakers it's best to start fresh with a 5.1 speaker system, you will never be able to match their sound with a center channel.

If that is undoable, you could purchase a center and rears for now and whenever your budget allows, upgrade the fronts later with a pre-selected pair that will match your center.

If you want a great system that's small KEF 1005 series speakers are going for 500 at accessories4less.

If you want big speakers. I suggest 4 Beta 20s and a Beta 250 from ebay. Very nice speakers IMO. Cant' be beat for the price right now either.

I will check out the speakers you suggested. Will think about gettind a 5.1 matched set.

Considering I got the technics for 30$ and the onkyo for 206$, I will try to continue and find good bargains but I dont want to sacrifice quality too much either..

I dont mind paying around 400-500$ but I will buy the pieces progressively in 3 steps to reduce the impact on my budget

2 front -> 2.1 w/sub -> center and rear for 5.1

Is there even a way to output in 2.1 with these receivers ? just leave rear and center channels empty or is there a special mode to select as well ?

Yes if you run them in stereo mode you will only get 2 channels and usually the sub. Subs are a very important, but a good budget one would be a Dayton 12". They actually sell them here in the audioholics store.

You can also find them on ebay.

Craigslist is a great place to get speakers and exercise equipment(just an fyi). Just make sure you stick to quality brands. I picked up 3 Kef2001.2s for 40 each off their. I got the rest of my system off ebay. With the exception of my receiver, and one of my 2001.2s which I got from accessories4less. I love that store.

Don't get Bose they have really poor frequency response. Also avoid sony for speakers

The ebay deal on Beta 20's is just amazing atm.

Since you are on a budget I wanted to let you know that KEF iQs are on clearance at accessories4less. The prices are amazing and you could pick up 4 iq1s and 1 iq2 for around 500. That would leave you with just a sub to purchase down the line. Those speakers are amazing IMO. And small enough that they wouldn't look bad in your home. You could also do a KEF egg set. They have great sound and are by far the best small speakers set IMO.

i'm at almost same position as you, and what i'm trying to do is build my own floorstanding speakers. for mi is my best and only option, but everybody seems to love Swan and Axiom. great speakers if you can get them in your country.

only missing piece wil be the sub if that works out

You don't want to run a 4 ohm speaker on that receiver. And I don't think those are very good speakers. I could be wrong, but I think you can do much better.

What actually make s agood speaker and why are the old one bad ?

Btw I checked out most the of speakers suggested, and the only ones that do it for me cosmetically speaking are the Beta 20s. I cant even look at the "kefs", except the IQs which a nice. The Axiom are worth 5 times my receiver so no go.

The surrounds might pose a problem. The onkyo 506 is not a very powerful receiver.
