Onkyo or Yamaha (Help to decide !!!)

Need your help to decide. I have an opportunity to buy 2 recievers for the same price . Just need to decide which one? Here they are:
1. Onkyo TX-SR505
2. Yamaha HTR 5960
I am gonna connect it to Klipsch F-2 fronts,Klipsch KSW-10 sub and probably F-1 for surround speakers.
Need your help and opinions to decide.

If you don't need HDMI switching, I think the Yamaha will be a better choice, since it's mostly identical to the RX-V659, a solid unit with a strong amplifier (see Gene's review on this site.) It has preamp outputs for external power amps, and a phono input to boot. The Onkyo 505 has HDMI switching, though it will not play audio from the HDMI input, you need to run a separate audio feed (digital or multi-channel analog) from any HDMI source components you may have.

Either will have ample power for your Klipsch speakers. What sources are you going to feed your new receiver with?

I only gonna connect it to my Pioneer DV400 DVD player and i may connect it to my digital cable box in the future. Thats about it.

The Onkyo can switch HDMI (I see the DV400 has HDMI output) but if your TV doesn't support HDMI then it's moot. Otherwise, you can run component video and optical/coaxial digital from the DVD player and from the cable box to the component and digital inputs on either receiver (assuming your TV has component video inputs, you can use S-video or composite on either as well if needed.) If you don't need HDMI, I'd lean toward the Yamaha myself, it's a very strong receiver. Hard to go wrong with either, though.

Are you just running the DVD player to the TV right now? What connections are you using for that (HDMI, component, S-video, or composite?)

I am running HDMI from DVD to my TV (NEW Samsung plasma) and want to run coaxial from DVD to Reciever for audio.

I have a similar Yamaha HTR-5860 receiver and recommend it for your application. It has more power and features than the Onkyo entry level receiver and also has pre-amp outputs. I am currently using my Yamaha as a pre-pro with an Emotiva LPA-1 amp.

If you want HDMI, save up for the Yamaha RX-V661 or Onkyo 605.

If you're just running coax digital for audio, I'd go with the Yamaha. They're solid machines, can't go wrong with 'em.

I'm looking to pair a Klipsch RF 62 home theatre system with a Yamaha rxv1800 or an Onkyo TX-SR705. Anyone have thoughts on the merits of either of these choices? Apologies Spinner for commandeering your thread - trying to be efficient as per the mod.

The Yamaha RX-V1800 is a much nicer looking receiver, and I believe it has a more stout amplifier section as well. It also features a scaler (although I don't consider this a purchase decision factor) and more than likely a superior On-Screen Display. I would go for the RX-V1800 for sure. If you need more power, you can find the Onkyo TX-SR805 for around $700-800 (as can the RX-V1800) and the Onkyo TX-SR805 looks a bit more refined than the TX-SR705 (I still think the Yamaha looks nicer).

I agree. I actually agree so much that I bought the 1800 myself.

I don't like the TX-SR705 so much, the TX-SR805 has the best bang for buck and looks nice. The Yamaha has a few more features, less power, but has a more graceful appearance. As a previous owner of that class of receiver (in terms of power and features) I can personally attest to their quality.

Thanks Seth for your thoughts. I likely don't need more power. I am now thinking the RF 62 may even be overkill given my room dim. (12x13) not an ideal shape but it's what I've got. I'm a newbie to mid-range home audio so any alternative config's would be appreciated. Given the size budget's not really an issue as anything much higher end can't be justified given the space. I'm looking to get the right system for the avail. space. Musically I prefer acoustic indy rock, latin and world music - if this helps.
