onkyo HT-7300 video BD artifacts at 1080p

i've had a Samsung PN-58C550 plasma and Samsung BDC5500XAA BD player with current firmware running for over a month. Running directly from the BD player to the screen everything has been working fine at 1080p.

This past weekend I installed a HT-7300. i'm using a 3' HDMI cable to go from the BD to the HT-7300, and a 6' HDMI cable from the HT-7300 to the screen. FWIW i'm also running a 3' HDMI cable from a cable STB to another HDMI input of the HT-7300.

Using the HT-7300, television at 1080i continues to work flawlessly. However, i'm getting a screen full of 'green pixel' artifacts when pushing 1080p from the BD through the HT-7300. I switched to high-end cables, changed the BD settings from auto to manual 1080p; set the receiver from auto to manual 1080p with no change.

Setting the BD manually down to 1080i resolves the 'green pixel' issue. However, I'd like to have 1080p resolved.

The HT-7300 receiver is in a closed cabinet, but has ~4" of clearance above the unit. And, I've left the doors open to allow ventilation to troubleshoot this issue. I haven't measured, but I'd guess no hotter than 90°F above the unit.

Any suggestions welcome.

thanks.

Have you tried any other sources scaled to 1080p to see if you are still getting the artifacts? My older Westinghouse TV will produces these sparkles if I feed 1080p via the HDMI but is ok using the DVI input.

I would send it an HD feed from your cable/sat box and set the HT-7300 to output 1080p and see if the issue is still there.

So did you leave the HT-7300 at 1080p when you adjusted the BR player to 1080i?

I'd guess the issue is with the video processing in the receiver. It could be a setting that doesn't match the BD player such as the player sending 24 frames per second but the receiver processing it as if it were 30 fps. It could be due to the way the receiver is processing 1080p - possibly decimating it to 720p then applying whatever settings you have set like Hue, Color, Saturation, etc and then rescaling to 1080p. If possible I'd just turn off all video processing in the receiver as they rarely do a good job of anything and it isn't required since the BD player and the TV will do the same thing.

However, I wouldn't be too concerned about sending 1080i if that solves the problem. The TV will deinterlace the 1080i to 1080p and it will be exactly the same as if the BD player sent 1080p to begin with.

thanks for the replies guys.

the TV was working fine using only the BD directly to the TV @ 1080p. so, it's not the screen.

the cable STB outputs 1080i max, which has no issue. I'd like to try another source for 1080p but i have none easily accessible.

to your final question, i set both the HT-7300 and BD to 1080i. did not think to try leaving the HT-7300 at progressive. something else to try.

as far as i can tell, i have video processing set to passthrough. but, i'll have another look at the settings.

i hadnt thought about the receiver de-interlacing the output. i need to get a good high-action BD and see if i can tell the difference.

thanks again for your input.
