I've only taken a quick glance at these two player's specs and the main differences that stand out are:

The Sony has a 12bit/108MHz video DAC, while the Onkyo uses a 10bit/54MHZ DAC so the Sony has a more powerful video DAC.

The Onkyo offers DVD-A playback, which is not available on any products from Sony.

The Onkyo weighs 16.1 lbs while the Sony weighs 9.7 lbs.

I have the Onkyo 802. While it's nice looking and has some snazzy features. As a player it's a dog turd. In the 3 months I've owned it, it's been in the shop over a month. It's not long for my world.
I would not reccommend Sony either. (Sorry)

I plan to get a Denon 1920

Are you looking for DVD-A or SACD?
