Yes it is my opinion.

But looking at the factors weighing against HD DVD succeeding made this seem like a silly move. But if Onkyo stands to only profit or break near even it isn't a complete waste of time for them on the off chance that HD DVD succeeds.:)
I think the question others were trying to ask is, "What are the factors weighing against HD DVD?" You mention them, but didn't clarify.
I see only supposed factors and speculation. REAL factors are manufacturer support, studio support, sales, ability to get units to public, etc.

I really don't care what format wins but I still think Blu-ray will win. Reason is because of amount of titles. The other day when I went to BB to get my A3 I was checking out what movies to get and the HD-DVD selection was very poor. BB had 3x the amount of blu-ray movies than HD-DVD. Then today I go to Fry's to get Rataouille on BD and once again there are like 4 new BD releases to one HD-DVD (which btw you could also get on BD). And then when you look at the top grossing movies this year, (Spidey 3, Transformers, Harry Potter, Bourne, Die Hard 4, Shrek 3, Ratatouille, Pirates 3) HD-DVD is only exclusive to 3 (Transformers, Bourne, Shrek 3) with 2 huge ones being BD only (Spidey, Pirates).

B&M availability, is variable, but the number of actual titles available in each format is very close. I looked at wikipedia and it says 331 HD to 351 Blu Ray. I rent my HD DVD's for the most part, then buy them online so I don't care about what is available in B&M's. I realize that does have an effect on some consumers.

As for the winner, I still think it's value offered for the price. Blu Ray is far from that for the average consumer.

It's Fall and still no sign of this player.

Toshiba has priced everyone else right out of the HD DVD hardware market including the Chinese players.

Not good for HD DVD - it's becoming more and more obvious that it's a one trick pony/one man show.

I can grasp your point... But if the "trick" includes having a completed spec and selling players for cheap to consumers, then I'll leave the alternative to the competition. You may want to read and comment on this:

China will ALWAYS be able to compete, don't you worry about that. In any case, Apple seems to be doing just fine without anyone else selling iPods. Now, I don't want only Toshiba making players, but I think the market is big enough for competition despite these cheap products.

HD DVD's specs are finalized? Because HD DVD insiders on the AVS Forum would have us believe that they are close to getting an HD51 disc ready.

How is that finalized?

Also, the "finalized" mandatory spec on HD DVD for audio is to decode 2-channel Dolby TrueHD. Two channel TrueHD!!!

I decided not wait for the onkyo and ordered a Toshiba XA2, as far i know the onkyo is a clone of the toshiba.

I have a Toshiba A2 since walmart sale, and i was extremely please with the players performance for $98. Even the build quality was impressive!

I know some places are already taking pre-oders for the onkyo at $799, i got my XA2 for $300 less!

Getting a triple layer 51 GB disc in the works doesnt mean the spec isnt finalized, IT IS FINALIZED. Blu-ray has a lot of work ahead of itself.. 2 min wait time is ridiculous on a $700 sony player. I got transfomers going in 30 sec!

Onkyo HD DVD for $799?

I would rather get the Samsung BD-UP5000 Combo Blu-ray/HD DVD (HDMI 1.3/7.1 Analog out/TrueHD & DTS-MA bitstream & Internal Decoding) for $799!:D

The samsung player look promising and will be best blu-ray player out there, and most likely best HD-DVD player too!!

Unfortunately i am one of those people that goes for looks, so when i have 2empty shelves on the rack, one will have to house an HD-DVD and the other with a Blu-ray player. Unfortunately i hate the look of sammy 1400, so i am leaning towards the sony 500, eventhough i know my money is going in the garbage for a crappy performing unit. Haven ordered anything yet.

Links, Seth=L, provide the LINKS! Quit stalling. If your gonna give an opinion, you better be able to provide links to it.
Why would he need links if it is just his opinion? He's not stating it as fact. It's just his opinion. :D

Waiting 41 seconds just for the tray to open on an XA2 is ridiculous.
The Sharp blu-ray player has discs playing from power on in about 20 seconds most times.
The PS3 in 15 seconds from power on.

Blu-ray has nowhere near as much work ahead of it as HD DVD. It's been over a year and a half since lauch and still only one manufacturer has standalone players on the market. Will Onkyo even launch their player with the pricing Toshiba has on theirs? The XA2 is only $499 on Amazon. Toshiba are pricing everyone else out of the HD DVD hardware game, whilst Blu-ray is still profitable for CE's and sells more software.

I thought the sound was amazing, an "A" easily. Which track are you listening to? How is it being decoded? I presume with the BD-P1400 and TX-SR875 you're bitstreaming the 24-bit TrueHD track?

I think you are totally disregarding the power of the cheap.

Im not saying which will win or lose but when walmart starts selling cheap HD players by the boatload....
What he said...wait for Black Friday and you will see...people like new and improved ALMOST as much as they like value for the money (ref: cheap).

Hmm, with the latest firmware update, it should speed up. (newest version 2.7 released 2 or 3 days ago)
I know with the A2 here, it DID cut my load time in half (at least for Shrek 3)

Now just waiting for load times to get better on the XA1.:(
