Once again: what are you listening to now?

Right now it's Uncle Tupelo's acoustic CD, March 16-20, 1992. This is a fine, simple, minimalist song set, somewhat similar to Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska, except with an audience. Great stuff.

DJ Shadow - In Tune and On Time (probably my favorite electronic set ever, it's got it's down times but a really good overall set)

Many nights I worked at the airport on an overnight shift, and I'd just kick back in my truck for an hour or so and listen to this...

I can't seem to get Kings Of Leon's "Only By The Night" off my playlist. The lyircs are almost unintelligeable (ala Bob Dylan) but the music is incredible! I bought it before Christmas and it keeps calling for my ears.
In my opinion, it ranks up there with The Joshua Tree, So, American Idiot, Metallica Black Album, etc.

I realize musical taste is subjective and personal, but I've specifically STOPPED listening to some of my favorite stations because they keep playing Kings of Leon. I'm not sure if it's the overplaying that made it horrible, or if I just think it's horrible music.

Black Album, Brothers in Arms, Led Zeppelin 4, etc. shouldn't be in the same sentance as anything from KoL... :D

Sorry I just had to *****! To each his own!
Cheers,
Aaron

The John Butler Trio - "Three", which was actually his second full CD. Maybe the tile references the number of players, but "Trio" would seem to take care of that. In any event, this is somewhat crudely recorded CD, much of it nearly mono, but also a good representation of how he sounds live (excellent performer). Butler is a self taught and original guitarist and singer/songwriter who can play some truly spectacular solos with a mellow, Australian hippie, environmenalist vibe and a jammy style. An outrageous solo is posted on Youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6VAkOhXIsI0

Regina Spektor, Begin To Hope. This odd, high voiced, keyboarding Russian immigrant can write some very nice songs. Her quirky singing style grows on you after a while.

I've been listening to Tchaikovsky's complete score for the ballet, The Sleeping Beauty. I taped a performance of it from last year's BBC Proms. It was performed by Valery Gergiev and the London Symphony Orchestra.

At this year's Proms, the LSO and Gergiev will be performing Shostakovich's 8th Symphony. I don't know this work, but Gergiev is meant to be a great interpreter of Shostakovich, so I'll make an effort to listen to this one.

It's always refreshing when there are other people out there that enjoy music from old composers. I am just fascinated with the works of Beethoven - I can't believe a man who was deaf could produce such beautiful music!

Tchaikovsky is pretty sweet too -- I think there may be a Nutcracker vinyl in the garage, performed by LSO... I'm not certain, though... I would have to check :p
