Tonight it's Don Chambers and Goat (Goat is his band) on his most recent CD "Zebulon". On Friday I saw a show where Chambers was the opening act for the Drive By Truckers at the Recher Theater in Towson (great!); I bought a Chambers CD at the show. On his CD he is somewhat strange gothic (in the E A Poe sense, not teens with monochrome makeup) country, with accoustical guitars and soft harmonies, produced by Patterson Hood of DBT. In person, he was somewhat Tom-Waitsy and sometimes Neil Young/Crazy Horse-ish, with a somewhat southern feel, strange band and tribal rhythms from a drummer who mostly played with timpani sticks and hub caps in place of cymbals. His electric banjo added additional atmosphere. "Zebulon" is interesting and unique, but not as good on CD as live. It does get somewhat weird if you pay attention to words and find lines like "the lantern of the decapitated man", "bind my wounds; give me another horse" or "I can waltz with my wooden leg".
I guess they are not "big", because, at the show, the drummer and bass player had to move from the stage to the table where they sold cds and t shirts but this CD is definitely worth a listen for those who like their music on the strange side.
